Matt Damon has now established a strong acting portfolio by working on several great projects. Starting his acting career with 1988’s Mystic Pizza, he gained prominence with 1997’s Good Will Hunting. Since then, he has been leading many projects like 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley and the Bourne franchise.
Along the way, he also met many celebrities that helped him in honing his craft including the GOAT star, Jack Nicholson. He is widely recognized for playing rebels in Hollywood, who inspired him to expand the horizon of his own character in the 2006 film, The Departed.
Jack Nicholson Inspired Matt Damon to Evolve His Character in The Departed
He co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and talked about how the former had some ideas regarding one of his scenes.
“The next day we were shooting a scene in a p-rn movie theatre, so Marty says, ‘Well okay, I’ll just get to it. Jack’s going to wear a d-ldo!’ And so I thought, ‘Well alright, you know, so be it.'”
He recalled that in p-rno theater scene, the GOAT actor disguised himself as a moviegoer who approached Damon. While it appeared that he was bringing out his gun, he ends up pulling the toy.
“Jack’s idea was ‘So here’s the deal — I’m going to come in and I’m going to sit there in the overcoat and I’m gonna turn around and pull out the big d-ldo and we’re gonna laugh.”
He recalled that his improvisation helped the Stillwater star to level up his character.
“If Jack was introducing this s-xual element, then I thought it was fair game in the script, and that we had to reference this from my character Colin’s standpoint.”
He continued,
“We’re in this macho world where everyone’s beating each other up… and Jack’s a s-xual dynamo – so here’s what I want to do: I want to lose every fight I’m in and I don’t want my d–k to work.”
While Damon was taken aback at Nicholson’s idea of pulling out that toy on set, it positively elevated his character. It is not the first time that the three times Oscar winner did on set as he even pulled out a real gun to enhance his co-star’s performance making the entire scene intense.
Jack Nicholson Pulled a Real Gun on The Departed Set
Looking back on the duo’s scene together, director, Martin Scorsese admitted having chills due to the GOAT actor’s off-script decision.
Speaking of the incident in Richard Schickel’s Conversations With Scorsese, Scorsese shared,
“The first thing Jack did was sniff the glass and say, ‘I smell a rat’…And then he pulled a gun on him.”
He continued,
“He didn’t tell me he had a gun. It was great…we took a lot out, but Leo’s reaction is real-time…I still get chills…It’s so real to me.”
The scene was quite surprising even for the Titanic star who suddenly faced a real gun while filming the sequence. However, their hard work paid off as the film was a critical and commercial success.
The Departed can be streamed from Amazon Prime Video.
