Sandra Bullock has a filmography that any rising actress would be jealous of. The actress has also been outspoken about various social issues and is known for her philanthropic efforts. But recently, the actress realized that she wasn’t as forward-thinking as she had imagined. The lesson dawned on Bullock during an interaction between her daughter and her longtime partner Bryan Randall regarding Netflix’s number 1 global hit show Squid Game.
How Sandra Bullock’s Daughter Made Her Realize Her Blindspots
Sandra Bullock is the mother of Louis (11) and Laila (9), who she adopted. During an episode of the Red Table Talk, the Gravity actress spoke about how she as a white woman views the world differently from her children of color. The star recounted a story about how her daughter Laila saw her longtime partner Bryan Randall watching the hit Netflix South Korean series Squid Game and got upset.
The actress said that her daughter was upset and depressed not because of the violence in the show but because there weren’t any Black people in it. Bullock recounted her daughter saying, “I don’t want Dad to watch that … because there are no Black people in it.” Her daughter’s reaction did surprise the star but it also made her happy.
According to the Miss Congeniality actress:
“The fact that there was a fire in her belly made me so happy that she was already voicing. I let [my kids] teach me and tell me what they need to know. I thought I was educated and woke, I thought I had it all, and guess what, I wasn’t.”
Squid Game is Netflix’s number-one hit show now. It amassed more than 1.7 billion streamed hours by the end of its initial 28 days. The South Korean show took the world by storm as it explored themes of class, capitalism, and more. Bullock further stated that she didn’t stop her children from watching or criticizing the show because she wanted to prepare them for reality despite her fears.
Sandra Bullock Reveals Her Fears As A Mother Of Two Black Children
During the Red Table Talk, Sandra Bullock admitted that as a white parent, she was afraid for her Black children’s future. She admitted that “as a white parent who loves her children more than life itself, I’m scared of everything.” Also, the actress said:
“I have to think about what they’re going to experience leaving the home. They’re going to have my fear, but how can I make sure my anxiety is accurate [and] protective?”
The Speed star further said that she could have transferred “all kinds of existential anxiety on them” accidentally. But Bullock stated that she lets her children experience everything rather than protecting them from the real-world issues of being Black. As per the actress, she “lets [her children] see everything on television and lets [them] process it.” It’s perhaps the best way to ensure that they get a realistic view of what’s going on in the world.
