Constance Wu is a talented American actress known for her remarkable performances in film and television. Rising to prominence with her role in the hit TV series Fresh Off the Boat, Wu has demonstrated her versatility and garnered critical acclaim for her compelling portrayals on screen. The actress previously opened up about a tough phase in her life.
During an episode of Red Table Talk last year, Constance Wu shared her feelings of “betrayal” by the Asian American community at a December 2019 event hosted by Simu Liu. At the Unforgettable Gala, which occurred shortly after her tweets expressing disappointment and a subsequent suicide attempt, Liu made a joke about her social media behavior, despite prior assurances not to address the topic.
Constance Wu Wasn’t Prepared For The Mocking
Constance Wu said due to the controversy surrounding her, she feared that the focus would shift toward her tweets. With deep affection for her co-stars, Wu wanted the event to be solely about their accomplishments. She clarified that she didn’t want anyone to make light of the situation since she was still emotionally vulnerable and unprepared to be subjected to mockery.
“They wanted me to come ’cause they wanted to celebrate the show and the kids on the show,” Wu explained. “At that time, there was so much controversy around me that I was like, ‘If I go, people are just gonna want to talk about the tweets, and like, I love my kids on the show so much. I want this to be a moment for them to celebrate.’ I told them, ‘I don’t want anybody to make fun of it, ’cause I’m still in a very raw place about it. I’m not ready to be mocked for it.'”
In her conversation with Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris on Red Table Talk, Wu revealed that the gala organizers were unaware of her suicide attempt. Nevertheless, they assured her that she would not become a target of mockery or ridicule during the event.
“They sat me in the front row and had all these cameras on me and within ten minutes, the show’s host made a crack at me,” she recalled.
Did Simu Liu Apologize To Constance Wu
While the specific details of the joke remain undisclosed, according to Deadline’s report, Simu Liu made a lighthearted jest directed at Constance Wu during the event. The audience’s reaction was marked by raised eyebrows and audible “oooooohs,” indicating a mixed response to the remark. Following the event, Constance Wu said that Simu Liu privately apologized to her.
Later, Constance Wu took to her Instagram Stories to rectify her earlier statement, acknowledging that she had mistakenly identified the hosting organization of the gala. In the episode, she initially mentioned the Coalition of Asian Pacifics (CAPE) as the host, but it was, in fact, Character Media who led the event.
In the interview, Constance Wu delved into various sensitive topics, including her complicated relationship with her mother, her decision not to disclose her experience of rape at the age of 22, and the instances of sexual harassment she encountered on the set of Fresh Off the Boat. These profound and personal experiences are also explored in her memoir, Making A Scene.
