After appearing in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 2005, Robert Pattinson got his breakthrough role as Edward Cullen in the romantic fantasy franchise Twilight. Pattinson has been unstoppable ever since as he went on to appear in several remarkable movies across genres.
Perhaps, it was fascinating, even for the English actor to play the iconic DC character Batman. Of course, the actor has proved his capability over and over again that he can delve into the depth of cinematic prowess beyond the romance of Twilight.
Robert Pattinson’s Twilight Audition
At the time of auditioning for Twilight, Robert Pattinson had developed an “absolute terror of auditions,” Speaking to GQ, the actor revealed that his enthusiasm for a role might collapse the very next morning due to his newly developed terror. “The same thing happened the morning of the Twilight audition,” Pattinson revealed.
“I used to live on my agent’s couch at the time in her apartment and uh she sent me the email exchangers. I’m freaking out I don’t want to go to the audition anymore ever underneath it saying, well, uh, fine fine to Valium in my bathroom. I’d never taken a Valium before. I was, I just remember, just feeling So Glorious in the back of the taxi with the window open and just being like wow this is what I’ve been missing and so I kind of, I think, I had this sort of quite Spacey detached kind of thing in the audition which must have kind of worked for the character.”
Further, Pattinson wanted to make the first movie of the franchise “as Arty as possible.” However, it caused a strange tension between the studio and Pattinson as they were scared to make it the way the actor envisioned.
Robert Pattinson’s Didn’t Care About the Public Petition Against Him
Even after being cast in the film, the road was pretty bumpy for Pattinson. First, the movie was not going according to the actor but the more serious issue at hand was that a public petition came out not to cast Pattinson. The actor remembers, that his manager came to the set on a surprise visit. “And I was like, ‘Oh hey,’ I just thought everything was fine,” Pattinson told GQ. “And then at lunch, they were like, ‘Okay, so, whatever you’re doing right now you need, after lunch, just do the opposite or you’ll be fired by the end of the day,’” he added.
Further, the actor believed that “if I try to play it light-hearted the way I would do it would end up looking so wrong like that I’d probably end up looking even more like a psychopath.” But when the news of casting Pattinson in the lead role, the fans of Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same name were pretty upset and signed a petition addressing the studio not to cast the Remember Me star. But the 37-year-old did not care about it.
“There was this big like tons of people signing this petition to have me not cast but nothing about my life really changed until the weekend or maybe like a week before the movie came out. So, when the signatures came it just felt such an abstract, uh, like I just didn’t really care, and uh, I was very excited about doing the movie but yeah then when it came out,” Pattinson said.
But when the movie hit the theatres, it all changed so fast, and overnight he was a star and he appeared in the saga of $3.3 billion.
