Jason Momoa started his acting career in the late 90s and had his breakout as Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in HBOs Game of Thrones. He was later cast as DC superhero Aquaman and made his debut with Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed by his appearances in Justice League and a solo film. He is set to reprise his role in the Aquaman sequel and also hopes to continue his Atlantis journey under James Gunn’s new DCU.
However, the Slumberland actor once rejected the offer to feature in James Gunn’s Marvel movie. Before Dave Bautista, the role of Drax the Destroyer was offered to Momoa. During an interview, he reflected on his decision while describing the reason he did not want to be Drax in the MCU.
Jason Momoa Rejected a Guardians of the Galaxy Offer
While looking for the lead stars for his 2014 film, James Gunn reportedly shortlisted Isaiah Mustafa, Patrick Wade, Dave Bautista, and Jason Momoa for Drax’s role in the 2014 film. The role finally went to the WWE star, who has played the character since. He is also set to reprise his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
However, when the Dune actor was approached for the role, he rejected the offer. During an interview, he revealed that he decided not to audition for the role as it was too similar to most of his characters. He shared that he did not want to be typecast in parts that don’t say much, are colored up, and have their shirt off.
While his DC role doesn’t seem too far from this perspective, he is not required to paint his body to play Aquaman. The Game of Thrones actor said that the Marvel role was great, but it was not the right thing for him. The denial came from his experience of playing Ronon in the sci-fi series Stargate Atlantis for four years.
Momoa shared that he was not happy with his character and didn’t want to go through the same thing again. “I’ve been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch,” the See star added.
Jason Momoa on the Guardians of the Galaxy Stars
During his interview, Jason Momoa also talked about Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista. Talking about Drax’s casting, he said that the wrestler-turned-actor is the perfect choice for the character. Momoa said, “I think it’s perfectly cast. Dave is perfect for that role, for Drax.”
He also mentioned an audition he did with the Marvel star Chris Pratt. The Wolves star called him “phenomenal” as he shared that one of the funniest auditions he’s done was with the Passengers star. Momoa revealed he was glad Pratt was the lead in Guardians of the Galaxy.
“He’s going to kill it. It’s going to be amazing. It’s a whole Han Solo vibe. It’s going to be a phenomenal movie,” he said. Momoa is set to reprise his DC role in the sequel to the 2018 film, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will release on December 20, 2023.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release on May 5, 2023.
