James Cameron intertwined the real and fictional in his movie Titanic when he made the world witness how the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic sank in 1912 but with a heartfelt fictional love story. The romantic drama was released on 10 December 1997 and it became one of the most famous movies in Hollywood.
After the recent OceanGate submersible accident, people started to speculate that the 68-year-old director might come up with another great script to let the world witness the tragic accident. But Cameron recently released a statement on the rumors circulating about him directing a movie about OceanGate.
James Cameron says “I am not in talks about an OceanGate film”
The tragic accident of OceanGate shocked many people. As James Cameron was the one who made Titanic a massive hit, people started speculating he might come back with a story on the recent tragedy as well. These rumors started circulating when a media outlet claimed that an insider has stated that The Terminator director is in talks to direct the film about the OceanGate tragedy. The insider said,
“He told the story of the Titanic so compassionately it feels like a natural step for him to take this on. Retracing the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking but there would be a lot of time, money, and resources dedicated to it.”
Since this article came out people have been intrigued to hear more about this project from the people involved in it. Cameron recently Tweeted and shunned all the rumors regarding this. On his Twitter account, the filmmaker wrote,
“I don’t respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.”
People in the comment section are seen asking Cameron about bringing back The Terminator on the big screen. Other netizens were grilling the media for spreading false rumors about the filmmaker.
James Cameron talks about the OceanGate tragedy
Last month during an interview, the 68-year-old filmmaker talked about the heartbreaking tragedy that shook the world. He opened up about how many people were concerned about the sub. While talking about the tragedy, Cameron said,
“Many people in the community were very concerned about this sub. And a number of the top players in the deep-submergence engineering community even wrote letters to the company saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers, and it needed to be certified, and so on.”
He further added,
“For a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site with all the diving that’s going on all around the world I think is just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”
Many people were disappointed to learn that the director of Avatar does not intend to make a film about the recent tragedy. Many were curious as to what perspective Cameron would have offered to the OceanGate story.
