Previously working with the acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, in The Dark Knight trilogy, as a supporting character, Cillian Murphy got the taste of perfection. Thus, having the experience of working with Nolan, Murphy secretly cultivated the desire to collaborate with the director for further projects.
On a recent note, while the 46-year-old Irish actor ticked off a crucial milestone in his career, Murphy claimed how he had been secretly waiting for that role, for eternity. Leading the titular role of the nuclear physicist in Nolan’s upcoming movie Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy opened up about his secret desperation for a lead role in one of Christopher Nolan’s movies.
Cillian Murphy’s Desperation To Work With Christopher Nolan
Cillian Murphy has been a part of Christopher Nolan’s movies since the early 2000s, following his supporting role in The Dark Knight trilogy. Highly appreciating Nolan’s approach to his films, Murphy soon became a fan collaborator of the acclaimed filmmaker. Desperate to work with the director, the 46-year-old confessed his secret desire.
While Cillian Murphy recently checked off a career milestone with Oppenheimer, the actor had always been desperate to collaborate with Nolan. Confessing to accept any role provided by Christopher Nolan, irrespective of its size and screen time, the Irish actor claimed to be a loyal performer in the 52-year-old’s movies.
“I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part” Murphy stated.
However, it’s no secret that the 46-year-old had been internally clamoring for a lead role in Christopher Nolan’s movies until he was cast in the upcoming biographical epic Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy Desired To Lead Christopher Nolan’s Movies
Although the actor diligently performed in Nolan’s highly appreciated movies like Inception, Dunkirk, and the Batman films irrespective of how small his role was, Murphy still wished to be a lead in the 52-year-old’s projects. Eagerly waiting to lead a Nolan-directed flick, Cillian Murphy expressed his secret desperation following his appearance in Oppenheimer.
“But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him,” Cillian Murphy confessed.
Thus, after more than two decades of secret desperation, the 46-year-old finally found his dream project. Playing the titular role in Nolan’s upcoming movie as a nuclear physicist, Murphy finally found a career-boosting opportunity. Recalling his disbelief after the director asked him to play the lead role, the Irish actor stated, “It was a great day”.
“With long-standing understanding and trust and shorthand and respect, it felt like the right time to take on a bigger responsibility. And it just so happened that it was a (expletive) huge one.” Cillian Murphy shared.
Despite being initially intimidated by the “huge responsibility” of playing the real-life physicist’s role, Murphy disclosed how he was put at ease by Nolan. “You know you’re with one of the great directors of all time. I felt confident going into it with Chris.” the actor stated. Thus, taking up the challenge, the 46-year-old appears to have done justice to the character and delivered an exceptional performance in the upcoming epic.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is scheduled to release in the theatres on 21st July 2023.
