In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Shia LaBeouf explained that he doesn’t think he has the confidence to be an actor anymore,

“I’m not a really confident actor. I don’t have faith in my abilities. It’s like if I told you to react to a gunshot right now. It would be much easier if I just got a gun out and pulled the trigger because you wouldn’t have to conjure anything. You would just react to it. I try to alter my life so that I don’t have to conjure anything or to make believe.”

In the early 2010s, actor Shia LaBeouf wrapped up his time as Sam Witwicky in the Transformers franchise. Mark Wahlberg then took his place and was the new face of the franchise. LaBeouf initially didn’t struggle to find roles as he appeared in films like Fury (2014), Man Down (2015), and American Honey (2016).

Several public incidents, controversies, and legal troubles destroyed LaBeouf’s image. Despite having remarkable acting skills, these negative headlines led to a decline in his relevance in Hollywood as the industry prioritizes professionalism and wants an actor that is popular among the fans.

In 2013, LaBeouf released his short film, Howard Cantour.com. After its release, many people pointed out its similarity to a 2007 comic, Justin M. Damiano. The actor then removed his short film stating that he had no intentions of copying it as he was just inspired by it.

Between 2014 to 2020, LaBeouf was arrested thrice for disorderly conduct. During one of his arrests, he made “profanity-laced racial remarks” toward police officers. The actor struggled with alcohol addiction which led to his arrests.

In December 2020, LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriend, singer FKA Twigs, filed a lawsuit accusing the actor of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. The actor admitted he had been “abusive” to himself and those around him “for years” and that “he was ashamed and sorry to those [he] hurt.

These controversies have now made it challenging for Shia LaBeouf to secure major roles in the industry. Despite having a big influence on the industry, LaBeouf will have a hard time redeeming himself.
