Right during the peak of his Spider-Man fame, Tom Holland is thinking of taking a temporary hiatus from acting. The continued fame celebrities have to deal with can get too much for some people. From actors, musicians, and other artists, fans have witnessed their need to take rest by going on hiatuses time and time again.
Although most do come back all energized to start on the journey of their biggest passion again, some, however, tend to find comfort and security away from the cameras and choose to give their celebrity status up completely. As such, Holland’s announcement that he will be taking a break comes as a shock to his fans.
Tom Holland’s Plans for the Future
Holland spoke about this in a lot of interviews last year that he has a few projects in the pipeline to tie up and then he will be taking a break for sure. The Devil All the Time star said, “I started acting when I was 11 and I haven’t done anything else.” This constant uphill battle to do something more and improve himself might have spurred him on to question a lot of things about himself, it seems. He noted, “I don’t even know if I want to be an actor,” and, “so I’d like to go and do other things.”
He also added jokingly that he might be having an advanced midlife crisis, saying “Genuinely, I’m sort of … having a midlife crisis – at 25, I’m having like a pre-midlife crisis.” He also explained that he wants to figure out who he is out of the tinsel world and wants to start a family. He commented enthusiastically, “I love kids. I can’t wait to be a dad — I can wait and I will, but I can’t wait!”
According to him, whenever he is at any parties or weddings he is always hanging out at the kids’ table. After this specific comment though, rumors of potential wedding bells have started ringing in the air. Especially as Tom Holland and his girlfriend and Spider-Man co-star Zendaya have not only bought a house together but can also be often spotted wearing each other’s initials on jewelry and clothes in public.
Tom Holland is not the only celebrity to retire early
As much as it seems like Holland’s announcement came out of the blue, he is not the only one to seek an early retirement, temporary or otherwise, from the fame. One of Hollywood’s evergreen legends Greta Garbo went into a temporary hiatus at the age of 36 while she was at the peak of her career in 1941, which unfortunately lasted till her death in 1990. Garbo was rumored to be a very private person and apparently struggled a lot with the fame the spotlight brought.
Game of Thrones famed Jack Gleeson also apparently retired after the series’ conclusion. He noted in an interview that he “stopped enjoying it as much as I used to” and that the “therapeutic” feelings he used to associate with acting drastically lessened since he turned it into his profession. Pop star Shawn Mendes as well had to suddenly put a stop to his ongoing tour last year, as he mentioned that he needed to take care of his mental health first.
As such, although it might be surprising, Tom Holland’s temporary break is not exactly out of the norm. However, on the brighter side as the actor mentioned, he does have a few projects to tie up before going on a break. And well, from a yet untitled Fred Astaire biopic, headlining the movie Beneath the Scarlet Sky, the Apple TV series The Crowded Room, Uncharted 2, and any potential Spider-Man return, the list is quite long. As such, it can be expected that fans will be able to see him for a long time before he takes a break.
