The creator of the hit TV show Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan, recently spoke out about his dissatisfaction with the show’s conclusion and how Kevin Costner’s character was killed off. Sheridan gave an exclusive interview to The Hollywood Reporter in which he discussed his struggles with studio suits, his thriving ranching business, and his feelings on Costner’s decision to leave the show.

The filmmaker has also expanded into ranching, turning his love of nature into a profitable enterprise. Taylor Sheridan’s success in the ranching industry is an integral part of his character. He has become a powerful mega-rancher right out of his own show, and not just because he writes great stories for TV.
It’s no surprise that everything he touches, whether in Hollywood or on his ranch, turns out beautifully because of his unwavering dedication to doing things right. The call from Paramount to Sheridan in 2021 was a turning point.
The studio’s parent company had sold Peacock the streaming rights to Yellowstone, but they were interested in Sheridan’s 1883 pilot because of the potential it held as a prequel series. What’s the catch? The show had to be available on Paramount+, the studio’s streaming service, by December 31st.
Taylor Sheridan was working under pressure to complete multiple tasks at once. His schedule included directing two episodes of Mayor of Kingstown and creating the film “1883.” Sheridan overcame the obstacles and delivered what the studio needed.
Kevin Costner’s Exit and Taylor Sheridan’s Disappointment
Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone was a major shock to the series’ fan base. Paramount has announced that the upcoming second half of the fifth season will be the final one. Costner desired to direct his Western epic, a four-film saga titled Horizon, which ultimately led to his departure from the project.
The show’s schedule had to be rearranged due to the loss of Costner’s participation. As his availability in Yellowstone decreased, the situation became more precarious so that he could focus on his film projects.
Taylor Sheridan admitted the challenges but said he tried to work around Costner’s schedule. The fifth season of Yellowstone was delayed due to the difficulties encountered during production. Sheridan expressed dissatisfaction with how the show’s ending would resolve Costner’s character, John Dutton.
“I’m disappointed. It truncates the closure of his character. It doesn’t alter it, but it truncates it.”

Despite Sheridan’s hints that Dutton’s demise was never intended to be the series finale, he insisted that the character’s ending remained true to his original movie script.
“I was killed in a fuck-you car crash! I don’t do fuck-you car crashes. Whether [Dutton’s fate] inflates [Costner’s] ego or insults is collateral damage that I don’t factor in with regard to storytelling.”
Despite his dismay, Sheridan clarified that he still greatly admired Costner as an actor and recognized the significant contribution Costner made in developing the legendary role. Throughout the character’s development, he also dispelled speculation about a disagreement with Kevin Costner.
Sheridan is dedicated to giving Yellowstone viewers a satisfying ending even as the show’s final season approaches. The American actor hinted that the final season might have more than the six originally announced episodes.
