Smith accepted that their relationship hadn’t been smooth since the beginning and they had hit numerous rough patches over the years. Despite it all, they had grown to respect each other and developed an unusual relationship cum friendship.
While they have always appeared to be one big family, Smith accepted she never did understand marriage or even divorce.
“I didn’t understand divorce. I will say that I probably should have fell back.”
She also admitted to Zampino that because she was so naive, she didn’t understand divorce and thought that Will Smith and Sheree Zampino’s divorce meant that their relationship was completely done.
“When Will and I first started dating, I had this thing in mind. I was like, ‘Well you did that, and that’s done.’ ”
The realization that their relationship was not done and that they continued to maintain contact for the sake of their son Trey was devastating to Pinkett since she didn’t know how to go on from there. Fortunately, motherhood and co-parenting allowed them to reach a middle ground.
