Not everyone is Tom Cruise, many actors aren’t comfortable enough doing their own stunts, and Kirsten Dunst was most certainly one of them. Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy consisting of Tobey Maguire made people fall in love with Mary Jane, but the journey wasn’t an easy one for the actress. She had to dodge a lot of bullets to save herself including avoiding some life-threatening stunts and a probable surgery to reshape her teeth.
Although it may sound bizarre, these were some ‘normal’ adjustments she was requested to make before she started filming for the 2002 blockbuster. Eventually, Dunst refused the ridiculous asks, in a 2019 interview with an Australian media outlet, the actress revealed what went on behind the scenes.
Kirsten Dunst refused a dangerous stunt in Spider-Man
It is often difficult for people to say ‘no’, especially actors when certain aspects of their jobs seem to have low regard for their life and put them in danger. In one such instance, the Spider-Man star, Kirsten Dunst promptly refused a stunt even after being persuaded by the director Sam Raimi several times. She believes it is important to set boundaries and further implied the power to say no. In an interview with news.com.au, the actress revealed,
“Mmm … not really. I’ve always said no. Like, it’s my life, you know? I remember once with Spider-Man, they kept at me with this one stunt where they strung me to the top of the ceiling and basically I bungee jumped. I didn’t really want to do it, and when I tried it I said, ‘Well, you should’ve shot that because I’m never doing it again. You’ll have to find another way’.It was terrifying, I hated it – so you should’ve shot that because I will never do it again.”
She then brings up a Chris Pratt story of how the actor was unbothered even after severely injuring himself while filming a GOTG movie. And stated, not all people are the same and perceive things the same way. Thus, Pratt’s reaction to the incident certainly does not match hers. Therefore, she never hesitated to let people know when something bothered her or made her uncomfortable.
Kirsten Dunst never really got her moment to shine
Even after being in the business for over three decades, the actress claimed she never really got her due respect, especially in the award seasons. She feels ignored by the entire Hollywood and wants nothing more than recognition for her hard work over the years. While promoting her Showtime series On Becoming a God in Central Florida, she opened up in an interview on SiriusXM’s In-Depth with Larry Flick about the matter. She said,
“I know that all you have is your work at the end of the day, and that’s all people really care about, and I’m intelligent enough to know that and have perspective,–But sometimes you’re like, it’d be nice to be recognised by your peers.”
“Of the things that people like, remember when Marie Antoinette — y’all panned it? And now you all love it. Drop Dead Gorgeous? Panned. Now you all love it,–I feel like a lot of things I do, people like later. I always feel like nobody — I don’t know, maybe they just think I’m the girl from Bring It On,”
Thus, after all these years Kirsten Dunst is now being brutally honest about how the world treated her, especially the industry, and how she had to fight alone to reach to where she is now.
