Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will hit theaters worldwide in May 2023. The third installment of the Guardians franchise arrives after a long hiatus, with the 2nd part having released 6 years ago in 2017. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel along with a new villain named High Revolutionary played by Chukwudi Iwuji.
The film will follow the backstory of Rocket, throw light on Gamora’s status, and tie up a few ends to bring it a full circle. More significantly, the movie will be the final hurrah for James Gunn as far as his association with Marvel Studios is concerned. The director has since moved camps to become the head of DC along with Peter Safran. Having helmed the 1st two installments successfully, will James Gunn pull off a hat trick of wins with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3?

James Gunn Receives Positive Response During Film Testing
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will see James Gunn collaborating with Marvel Studios for the final time as director. According to industry insider Jeff Schneider, the film looks to have gained positive responses during its initial screen testing. James Gunn, for his part, has been vocal about his satisfaction in making the film in the way he had imagined. The director in an interview with Entertainment Weekly is quoted to have said,
“Once I started doing the first Guardians movie, I felt drawn to it. I felt called to it if that makes any sense. So I feel very good [about Vol. 3] because I feel like I did everything that I possibly could to make this trilogy as good as it can possibly be. And I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I had all these people around me making it. It’s the biggest blessing of my life.”
With Gunn’s confidence and the initial images and trailers of the film adding to the hype, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has all the makings of a summer blockbuster.
How Relevant are Film Test Screenings?
James Gunn’s final feature with Marvel was appreciated during its initial testing. This sentiment was echoed by GWW’s K C Walsh as well. He also spoke about the ambivalent nature of these testings and their validity in the context of a release. Walsh said that despite favorable initial opinions pouring in, these reactions do not represent the large general audience who are the ultimate judges of a film’s success at the box office.
He added that the people who are appointed to see screenings are most often than not related to the project in some way. The comic book aficionado quoted the example of the recently released Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania which was praised during testing but did not find favor with the public during its official worldwide release.
