Artificial Intelligence has recently become a series matter of concern for the film industry. With one of the main points of focus for the writers’ strike being AI and the use of it risking many people’s jobs, many celebrities have started to speak up against the use of it. This includes Samuel L Jackson.
He is an incredibly influential actor in Hollywood, being part of massive projects like Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Shaft, as well as his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury in projects like the Avengers franchise, Captain Marvel, and most recently the Secret Invasion miniseries. So the question that arises is, what does Samuel L Jackson think about AI?
Samuel L Jackson Talks About Artificial Intelligence
Samuel L. Jackson was asked while doing press for Secret Invasion, what he thought about Artificial Intelligence in light of The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists recently going on strike. The actor revealed that he has been wary and cautious of AI long before any of the ongoing strikes. He added that this sentiment does not simply extend to his day-to-day life, but also to his career and legal documents.
“People just started worrying about that? I asked about that a long time ago,” he stated
He went on to elaborate, stating that his specific concern when it comes to AI is the use of deep fakes or similar means to use anyone’s face and voice to keep their character alive in future projects. This is the reason why Jackson looks out for specific words that can be used as approval for the use of Artificial Intelligence and removes them from the contracts he signs.

Samuel L Jackson then went on to acknowledge that Artificial Intelligence is something to be cautious about and that actors need to pay more attention to the contracts they sign. He suggested that they look out for specific words like ‘in perpetuity’ or ‘known and unknown’ which could basically mean that their face could still be used to portray a particular character, regardless of unforeseen circumstances like an untimely death.
“Future actors should do what I always do when I get a contract, and it has the words ‘in perpetuity’ and ‘known and unknown’ on it. I cross that s**t out. It’s my way of saying, ‘No, I do not approve of this.'” he stated.
