Stories from behind the scenes are often just as interesting, if not more so, than the stories they help create in Hollywood’s ever-changing, multicolored world. After all, making a film is an incredible adventure full of ups and downs, successes and failures.
Enter Jared Leto; the Oscar-winning actor is lauded for blending into his roles, from the heinous Joker to the transgender Rayon. Leto, who filmed Panic Room thriller with Kristen Stewart and the highly regarded director David Fincher, revealed an intriguing account of his behind-the-scenes experience on set. The root of his trouble? Cornrows on his head, a seemingly insignificant characteristic.
Jared Leto’s Sleepless Saga
It is to be expected that an actor like Jared Leto, renowned for his ability to inhabit different characters, would encounter difficulties in his career. Cornrows were a necessary part of the look Leto was going for in this thriller.

The actor didn’t realize that his new hairstyle would keep him up all night in excruciating pain. Cornrows were thrown into the mix, and with them came an intriguing rumor that got fans talking on social media. What’s with the rumor? David Fincher braided Leto’s hair.
“[David Fincher] actually braided my hair. A lot of people don’t know this about David but he spent a big part of his youth in the islands and learned how to braid cornrows.”
Fans were amused and confused by this news, wondering how Fincher, who is so meticulous in his approach to filmmaking, could also be involved in hair styling. Leto, ever the jester, quickly cleared any misunderstandings by exposing the artist behind the cornrows.
A Tale of Candy and Cornrows
Jared Leto clarified that his earlier jokes about Fincher’s involvement were just that: jokes. A stylist from Los Angeles was also consulted for Leto’s new do. A woman named Candy worked her magic on Leto’s hair, and her LA salon is appropriately called “Candy for Hair.”
“They were really painful initially—I couldn’t sleep the first night, it was so excruciating. And it was all one hundred percent human hair. My hair. But the woman who did [the braiding], named Candy—who has a salon in L.A. called Candy for Hair, appropriately—got it down. What would take some people four to six hours to do, she was doing in an hour. And I actually enjoyed it once I got used to it.”
Leto, a frequent target of gossip, has been caught in the center of a whirlwind of falsehoods. There were rumors about Leto’s performance as the Joker in The Suicide Squad, including one that claimed director David Ayer was unhappy with Leto’s work and cut some of his scenes. But Ayer quickly put an end to that rumor. Leto, however, appears to have perfected the art of acting nonchalantly in the face of adversity.
