Leonardo DiCaprio On Turning Down The Matrix

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer of The Matrix, shared that when the team was searching for Neo, DiCaprio was one of the top contenders. Riding high on the phenomenal success of Titanic, the actor was considered for the role. However, Leonardo DiCaprio‘s recent experience with a visually intensive film led him to decline the opportunity. Having just completed a cinematic phenomenon, he felt the need to depart from visual effects-driven projects for the time being.

“Then we go to Leonardo [DiCaprio]. He says yes, we have meetings with him and then he goes, ‘You know, I can’t go do another visual effects movie having just finished Titanic’, and he drops out’.”

The Uncertain Casting of Keanu Reeves In The Matrix

Although DiCaprio’s exit left the producers searching for their Neo, fate led them to Keanu Reeves. Despite initial reservations from the studio, Reeves eventually secured the role, breathing life into the enigmatic character of Neo. As the production progressed, additional casting choices solidified the iconic ensemble in the movie.

“Along the way, we realized how hard it was what we were doing. Here were these young guys who had done one movie, and they were going to direct this very hard-to-understand script. The good news was, Keanu said yes and he was awesome. I don’t think I would change anything. The bigger the star, the more likely the studio was to say yes. So we started with the very biggest and got to Keanu and he gave us the momentum. The truth is, that movie rises or falls on those four.”
