Quentin Tarantino has lived up to his ten-movie goal. The legendary director, who is currently working on his final masterpiece, The Movie Critic, has declared that he is ready to quit filmmaking, after a stellar three-decade-filmmaking career. During a recent interview, the 60-year-old Reservoir Dogs director has now decided to hang on to the writer’s pen, so he could go on creating novels and cinema literature.
Quentin Tarantino Retiring, Only To Pick The Writer’s Pen!
It’s finally etched in stone as Pulp Fiction director, Quentin Tarantino decides to quit filmmaking. The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director previously declared that he would retire after making 10 films or at the age of 60 and “go and write novels and cinema literature, stuff like that”. Now that he has done both, the decision has been made.
Tarantino, who recently announced the title of his tenth film, The Movie Critic, made headlines for his 2022 book, Cinema Speculation, based on late film critic Pauline Kael. When asked in a recent interview if she was also the inspiration behind his last film, Tarantino responded:
“Yes, it is part of the landscape. The story takes place in a world where Pauline Kael exists and is alluded to, but the film is not about her.”
The 60-year-old director, however, divulged a bit about his 10-movie goal in 2014 while he was promoting The Hateful Eight, reiterating his desire to leave the plan. But again, he also said that the words are “not etched in stone”. Well, now they truly are as Tarantino retires after an illustrious 30-year-filmmaking career.
Quentin Tarantino’s Desire To Extend Cinema Speculation
Quentin Tarantino may find s-x scenes “non-essential” in the kind of movies he created over 30 years, but the director never, for once, hesitated from censorship or restriction. Rather, he was lucky enough to enjoy a certain freedom, that many filmmakers crave.
As the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker retires after a marvelous career, the man is surely living up to his dream of writing novels. In this interview, Tarantino expressed his desire to write more novels, and specifically create a second volume of Cinema Speculation. He said:
“I want to make a second volume of [Cinema Speculation] that also encompasses the ’70s but with other films, also from my adolescence. And then I will jump to the ’80s, and I will also talk about cinema from outside the United States.”
Tarantino’s hits like Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs, and his 2019 “revenge movie”, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood are classic examples of the kind of freedom he boasts of. Well, the man, known for using uber-violence and profanity in his movies, hasn’t truly retired as fans look forward to many best-seller novels by the legend.
The Movie Critic is scheduled to release in 2024.
