James Cameron surprises fans with his take on 2002s Resident Evil
The director of some of the most influential and commercially successful movies of all time has revealed his love for a not-exactly beloved movie, Resident Evil. During the lockdown, James Cameron revealed his love for the 2002 video game adaptation.
Even though Resident Evil isn’t deemed the perfect video game adaptation, The Terminator director seems to have a soft spot for the Milla Jovovich movie. In an interview with Empire, while sharing his thoughts on different movies, the director described the Resident Evil movie as one of his guilty pleasures and loved his Avatar colleague Michelle Rodriguez’s performance in it. He further stated,
“One of the guilty-pleasure films that I actually think is quite beautifully made is Resident Evil. Watching Michelle Rodriguez in that film, moving like this feral creature, is joyful.”
Even though James Cameron seems to have an affection for the 2002 video game adaptation, the movie in general garnered a mixed reception from the audience. But the movie eventually went on to kickstart a six-film franchise based on the games.
Why did the Resident Evil movies fail?
Although the first movie in the franchise went on to surprise James Cameron, it did average among the fans. The first movie was deemed as a misguided adventure that went on to entertain many but was panned by the critics. But the following movies in its footstep went on to fail immensely.
Even though the movies have been considered entertaining by many, the franchise as a whole has been deemed ludicrous and doesn’t do justice to its source material. One of the major problems was the lack of quality characters in the movie, which fall short in comparison with the games.
Although some of the movies were commercially successful, it was bashed by the critics and didn’t live up to the level of the video games. But even though the movies fell victim to the infamous video game curse, the first movie in the franchise was able to impress one of the most influential filmmakers of our time.
Many fans may not see eye to eye with the Avatar: The Way of Water director though, as the 2002 movie wasn’t able to capture the essence of the games. But many fans have commended James Cameron for not shying away to express his opinion about the movie.
Resident Evil is available to stream on Amazon Prime.
