Hugh Grant is a phenomenal actor who has appeared in numerous films and TV shows including but not limited to Notting Hill, a rom-com co-starring Julia Roberts. The movie Four Weddings and a Funeral bought him public attention, and since then, Grant has starred in blockbusters like Love Actually, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, and Music and Lyrics, co-starring alongside Drew Barrymore.
Hugh Grant disses Drew Barrymore’s singing
The charming actor once appeared on The Graham Norton Show along with Meryl Streep, where he disclosed how many leading ladies hate him. The actor had several female leads who despise him, including the likes of Julia Roberts, Rachel Weisz, and Drew Barrymore.
The Notting Hill actor humorously elaborates that there was already some off-screen tension between him and Barrymore, but after “she made the mistake of giving me notes,” says Grant, things were irreversible after that. Hugh Grant was offended mostly because Drew Barrymore dared to give him notes despite being a horrendous singer herself.
The Undoing star gave an interview with WIRED to promote his recent film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Among a series of AI-generated questions, one of them was about his performance in Music and Lyrics, and he was asked if it was him who is singing, to which Grant said,
“That’s not true; I’m auto-tuned a bit, but not as much as some. Drew Barrymore was in that film with me, and I don’t think she’d mind me saying her singing is just horrendous,”
He continued,
“But having said that, once they tuned her up, she sounded way better than me — because she’s got heart and voice and rock ‘n’ roll, whereas I sounded like Julie Andrews, and I’m meant to be rock ‘n’ roll.”
The interview soon reached the actress and now the host of The Drew Barrymore Show. She took to Instagram to address these comments made by her co-actor.
Drew Barrymore replies to Hugh Grant’s unwarranted comments
Drew Barrymore had nothing but good things to say about Hugh Grant despite his harsh comments on her singing abilities. Barrymore also took this opportunity to remind everyone of her singing. She posted a video on Instagram, replying to Hugh Grant’s comments.
Barrymore used the platform of her show to discuss Grant’s comments and confirmed that she was not offended in the least,
“If you know Hugh, that is his way of loving you. It’s funny, too, because there’s this thing going around with him and Ashley Graham on the red carpet. And people are like, ‘He’s such a curmudgeon. And she’s so thrown.’ I’m like, ‘No, that is Hugh Grant.’”
She continued,
“You think you’re getting this charming movie star, and what you get is grumpy Hugh,” she said. “And then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh. It took me a second, probably like Ashley Graham on the carpet. Like, ‘Oh who am I dealing with.’ And then I was like, ‘Oh no, I love you, I want to love you. You’re not letting me love you.’”
It took her some time to become friends with her grumpy co-actor but after she could see who he is, she loved him. Their fun little online-offline banter is the best dose of serotonin we could ask for.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will release on 31st March 2023.
