Tom Hanks is one of the most well-known and respected actors in Hollywood. Starring in some massively successful projects like Forrest Gump, A Man Called Otto, The Da Vinci Code, and Sleepless in Seattle, he has made a name for himself as one of the most versatile actors in the industry. For this skill, he has been awarded time and time again through his many Oscar nominations and wins for films like Forrest Gump and Philadelphia.
Being so successful professionally, it is only natural that the characters that Hanks plays, inspire many to create similar ones, this seems to be the case for Charlie Cox’s recent role in Netfilx’s highly successful series, Treason.
Charlie Cox Got Cast In Treason Because Of Tom Hanks
Charlie Cox is best known for his work in the fan-favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Daredevil, where he played the titular character. The actor was recently part of the Netflix series, Treason, where he showcased his versatility as an actor, playing a character so similar yet so different than Matt Murdock. The series’ director, Matt Charman, went on to comment on the Daredevil actor’s performance in the series.
“[He makes me] think of Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford,” Charman stated, “These are guys that have a deep morality to them, a sort of trust. I think Charlie has that too. When he starts to wander away from what you think he is, you think, ‘Wait, was I wrong? How far is this guy going to go?’ It’s exciting to play with that expectation.”
He also mentioned that Cox’s character, Adam Lawrence, reminds him a lot of Tom Hanks’s character in Bridge of Spies, a film Charman co-wrote. The director revealed that both these characters and Cox himself, have a deep morality to them that make them stand out as interesting personalities. Charman then went on to applaud Cox’s acting style, stating he has the tendency of exceeding everyone’s expectations and deliver an amazing performance.
Charlie Cox Talks About His Character In Treason
While doing press for the series, Charlie Cox talked about his character, Adam Lawrence, and one of the biggest debated questions relating to him, which is, is Lawrence a good person or does he deserve to be in jail? The actor revealed that he is quite conflicted when it comes to this, however, he ended up feeling that Lawrence is not as bad as some say.
“I went back and forth on this,” says Cox. “I ended up feeling that what makes him a hero is that he’s able to ultimately do the right thing at great cost to himself. And he’s able to admit to and recognize past failings. I think that is the essence of modern-day heroes because nobody’s perfect.”
He went on to say that what makes his character a good person is the fact that he is willing to do the right thing, regardless of the cost, even if it was personal. Cox then went on to add that this is what makes modern-day heroes so much better, the fact that their morals are not black and white, but rather, lay on a grey scale.
