From Peaky Blinders to Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy proved he is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood. He has starred in several critically acclaimed films such as Inception, 28 Days Later, and A Quiet Place Part II. Also, in his role as the London-based gang leader Thomas Shelby in the British TV series Peaky Blinders, he unquestionably stands out as the leader of the Shelby clan.
His latest movie, Christopher Nolan’s biopic Oppenheimer, arrived in cinemas last month and has already broken records. Murphy made his professional debut in Enda Walsh’s 1996 play Disco Pigs. That was the time when Cillian Murphy met his wife, Irish artist Yvonne McGuinness while working on the stage version of Disco Pigs. However, he has always been private about his personal life and has only mentioned it a few times. It makes sense, as he seems very committed to privacy.

Cillian Murphy and His Wife, Yvonne McGuinness, Don’t Do Red Carpets Together
Murphy met his wife McGuinness while he was acting in a local production of the play Disco Pigs in Ireland back in the late 1990s. She joined Murphy while he toured the UK for the next year and a half performing in the play. In 2016, the Oppenheimer star told The Guardian:
“That time, making Disco Pigs, was kind of the most important period of my life.”
The pair got married in 2004 and have two children together: Malachy, who was born in 2005, and Aran, who was born in 2007. The family used to live in London, but they moved back to Ireland in 2014.
But do you know Murphy and his wife avoid the red carpet? That’s because they don’t like to be in the public eye.
“I get the bus, I get the tube, I go to the shop and get the milk and do normal things. I would hate it if that became impossible. As an actor, you’re supposed to be playing real people, so it seems essential to live like a normal person.”
– as he put it back in 2014.
Which is why most of Murphy’s fans aren’t much acquainted with his beloved wife and family. You even didn’t see McGuinness on any pre-SAG-AFTRA strike red carpets; in fact, their only photos appear to be in a few pap pictures from back in 2016.
