So, with so many of his characters becoming iconic pieces of the history of cinema, it’s natural that a few inspirations were derived from some of them in the modern day. Thus, when some eagle-eyed viewers were enjoying the progression of Daniel Craig’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, they couldn’t help but point out the resemblance of Edward Norton’s character to an iconic Cruise character from the past.

While there have been a lot of iconic and memorable characters and roles that stars have helped to immortalize with their hard work and talents, Tom Cruise is one of those few stars that have had a lot of his roles become a part of cinematic history, may it be Peter ‘Maverick’ Mitchell from the Top Gun franchise or Ethan Hunt from the Mission: Impossible franchise. Although no one but enthusiastic cruise fans could’ve guessed the easter egg that Rian Johnson laid in the narration of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with Edward Norton.

During an interview with Insider, Rian Johnson talked about how he was caught completely off-guard when he first saw The Incredible Hulk star dressed as Frank Mackey in a shirt and a sleeveless leather vest on top with slick black hair from Cruise’s 1999 film Magnolia, where he plays the role of a motivational speaker. This easter egg was a direct correlation to Norton’s character of Bron, who always tried to copy others rather than come up with something new and original. In regards to this incredible incident, Johnson said:

“He (Norton) and Jenny Eagan, our costume designer, came up with the look and I had no idea, I started cracking up. But then I thought, ‘Is this too much?’ I also thought, ‘What is Paul going to think of this?’ Hopefully he takes it in the right spirit.”

Thus, the film was able to develop and explain the characteristics of one of the main protagonists as well as honor the classic history that Tom cruise has left behind.
