Hugh Jackman Was Embarrassed In The Audition For Miss Congeniality

Renowned actor Hugh Jackman, recognized for his Emmy, Tony, and Grammy awards, has left an indelible mark with his portrayal of Wolverine in the beloved X-Men films. Nonetheless, his journey to success encountered a few obstacles. In a recent conversation with Variety, Jackman revealed an intriguing anecdote from his career—a notable audition for the beloved Sandra Bullock comedy, Miss Congeniality. This took place in the same year as the release of the initial X-Men film, when Jackman had yet to attain his present-day stature.

During the audition process, Jackman found himself in contention for the role of FBI agent Eric Matthews, a character eventually brought to life by Benjamin Bratt. Surprisingly, Jackman confessed that he had no particular desire for the part; it was his agent’s insistence that prompted him to audition. The agent’s strategy was to utilize the possibility of securing the role in Miss Congeniality as leverage during negotiations for another project titled Someone Like You, which Jackman ultimately accepted.

Jackman marveled at her remarkable agility and quickness during their shared reading, realizing that he was struggling to keep pace. Despite exerting his utmost effort, he admitted that he had not fully grasped the script. This audition marked his initial experience of testing with another actor, and he was taken aback by Bullock’s presence, as he hadn’t anticipated her involvement. Jackman estimated that she had tested with approximately eight different individuals. The outcome of the audition proved disappointing for Jackman, as he did not secure the role.

The situation humbled the actor to a certain extent, as his agent had urged him to pursue a job they didn’t actually desire him to obtain.

Holy shit! She’s amazing! And so quick and fast. I’m not even vaguely up to speed here.’ I was pedaling as fast as I could, but I didn’t know the script well enough. It was the first time I’d tested [with another actor] … I was impressed that she was in there. I didn’t expect her to be in there. I’m guessing eight people she tested with. That’s humiliating, when your agent says, ‘I don’t want you to get this job, but just go get it.’ And then you don’t get it.”

Nonetheless, Jackman’s willingness to openly discuss this experience sheds light on the challenges and uncertainties actors face, even those who later attain great acclaim.
