Money and fame aren’t the only two constants in Tom Cruise’s life. The Top Gun star has had numerous passionate affairs and romantic rendezvous over the course of his Hollywood career. Having married thrice, Cruise is no stranger to the ins and outs of being a husband and a father. But sadly enough, it always ended up in a split between him and his significant other, be it an amicable break-up or a bitter one.
Out of all his relationships though, Cruise’s marriage with Nicole Kidman was the one that lasted the longest. After all, a decade isn’t a short time.
The couple first crossed paths on the set of Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder in 1989 and were together till 2001. There had even been a brief period during their marriage when the Jack Reacher star was rumored to be gay, but the two seemed to have survived through all such numerous ups and downs for more than ten years. Only to be separated in the end.
How Nicole Kidman Reacted to Rumors About Tom Cruise Being Gay
After meeting on a film set in 1989, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise ended up tying the knot just a year later on Christmas Eve in 1990, in a private ceremony held in Colorado. Over the course of the next 11 years, the pair had a glamorous relationship both on and off the screen. They even starred in three films together which further cemented their status as a power couple.
However, even after them clearly being head over heels in love with each other, rumors had been swirling around during their marriage about how Cruise was interested in men and was a homosexual. In an old interview with Vanity Fair when he’d still been Kidman’s husband, the Aquaman actress addressed the same in a state of anger, claiming just how false said rumors were.
“I did not marry into a marriage of convenience. I would never, ever do that. You marry for love. We’re both heterosexual. We have a lot of homosexual friends, and neither of us would shy away from having a homosexual role. He played the vampire Lestat and didn’t give a shit. But I take offense if people say I would marry into a marriage of convenience. I think that’s very sexist because they’re saying, ‘She married for fame and money.’ It’s bullshit.”
Kidman’s lust-turned-love for Cruise might have ended up in a lavish wedding and two lovely children, but it certainly ended up in a bitter divorce years later.
Nicole Kidman Was 100% Sure She Hadn’t Married A Gay Man
Homosexuality wasn’t something that was welcomed with open arms and readily accepted back then. In fact, so many celebrities only recently came out of the closet and became comfortable enough to openly talk about their sexuality.
But when the interviewer suggested the possibility of Kidman being unaware of her now ex-husband’s sexuality, the American-Australian actress was adamant that it was utterly impossible that Cruise, 60, had “a gay life” which he was keeping a secret from her.
“I’ll bet all my money I’ve ever made, plus his, that he doesn’t have a mistress, that he doesn’t have a gay lover, that he doesn’t have a gay life.”
Upon being asked why there were rumors about him being gay in the first place then, the Big Little Lies star simply attributed all the gossip to Cruise’s dashing good looks that anybody would swoon over.
“He’s mighty fine-looking, and he’s worth having a fantasy about.”
But after all the declarations of love and vows of happily after, the Vanilla Sky star filed for a divorce from his now ex-wife back in 2001. Courtesy of a harsh and controversial split, the pair made it so that they never crossed paths again. There have even been rumors about how Cruise skipped the 95th Academy Awards for the same reason because he didn’t want to risk running into his ex-wife.
However, neither of the parties has given a word with regard to said claims yet.
