Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill’s unceremonious exit from the DC universe set tongues wagging. Everyone wanted to know what went wrong. After all, The Rock had proudly said that he had taken great pains to bring Henry Cavill back as Superman and there were plans to make a Man of Steel sequel as well as a Black Adam vs Superman film. But that didn’t happen. Instead, there were allegations that Johnson had used Cavill to boost his DC film’s box office chances. Now, The Rock has finally explained what actually happened.

Dwayne Johnson was in attendance at the 95th Academy Awards and Variety didn’t let go of that opportunity to ask him about Henry Cavill and his departure from the DC universe. The actor said:

“You know, all that I could do and we could do is put our best foot forward while we were making Black Adam and surround ourselves with the best people and also deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s, critics took a couple of shots, but that’s just the business of it though. It’s almost like when you have a pro football team and the quarterback is winning championships, the head coach is winning championships, and a new owner comes in and says not my coach, not my quarterback I am gonna go with somebody new.”

Many fans interpreted The Rock’s last words as a swipe at new DC Studios co-CEO, James Gunn. After all, it seems like in Johnson’s eyes he and Cavill were “winning championships.” However, the box-office collections tell a different story.

It’s largely assumed that the dismal box-office collections led to any sequel plans getting shelved. Gunn’s arrival was just the final nail in the coffin for Johnson’s DC plans. However, most fans weren’t interested in just dissecting his words. They also praised The Rock for keeping his cool during this salacious interview.

The entire situation around Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson’s DC exit has become somewhat of a taboo topic. After all, till now there wasn’t a clarification on what went wrong behind-the-scenes, but it was generally assumed that the relationship between Johnson and the WB bosses must have soured a lot. As such, many fans praised the Variety reporter for asking Johnson this brave question while others praised The Rock for answering the question with dignity and not giving everyone a repeat performance of the Will Smith-Chris Rock scandal from last year.

Here’s what the fans joked about:

The Rock has always faced ups and downs in his career, but no matter the situation, he has always been calm and never disrespected his castmates or the studio he worked for. As such, it was highly unlikely that Johnson would have slapped the reporter for just asking a question that was on every DC fan’s mind.
