Iron Man was a literal stepping stone to success for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If things didn’t go the way they did, who knows where the MCU would be right now? But thanks to an epic storyline and Robert Downey Jr.’s performance, Iron Man became a hit and the superhero found a place in the hearts of all fans.

Now that Downey has left an unerasable mark on the superhero universe, do you think Samuel L. Jackson could have been as perfect a fit as him? Back in 2006, Jackson was talking to Mark Walters at the San Diego Comic-con about playing Nick Fury in the Marvel films. During the conversation, Jackson let the interviewer know that he was once interested in playing Iron Man. Jackson stated,

“I see Avi Arad [former head of Marvel Studios] because we live in the same neighbourhood and I kind of expressed my interest in…I always wanted to be Iron Man. Because he’s kind of a rich dude, who created this stuff.  He’s not really kept as a superhero, he just creates stuff to make himself a superhero.”

Well, we can’t blame him. Who wouldn’t wanna play the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, after all? In the end, Jackson did say that playing Nick Fury would be “great,” too and it looks like things worked out for the better, didn’t they?

Jackson is going to be reprising his role as Fury in the upcoming Disney+ miniseries, Secret Invasion. The series, while being a mystery, will pick up the story from Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Judging by the trailer, the series is going to be one hell of a ride as Fury prepares for “one last fight.”

Along with Fury, Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/ War Machine), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), and Martin Freeman (Agent Ross) will also be seen returning to their roles. The series will also see Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman making their MCU debut.

The series will be six episodes long and as for its tone, Smulders once stated that it will be a “darker show.” She added,

“We are going to get deeper into the characters. We are going to see them in new ways, and it’s going to be an exciting thriller. You’re never going to know who people are. Are they a Skrull? Are they human? It’s going to be a guessing game.”

Jackson confirmed that the Fury we are used to seeing is not what we will be getting in Secret Invasion. He stated that the “perfectly indestructible guy” is long gone and that he is much more vulnerable now. Consider us invested!

Secret Invasion will release on Disney+ on June 21, this year.
