Versatility is perhaps the most powerful thing an actor can have in his arsenal, and Henry Cavill seems to have it in spades. This ingenuine ability of his to bring out the true essence of every character he portrays is also one of the major reasons why fans are rooting for Cavill to be donned as the new James Bond. You take one look at the man and you just know he’d be the perfect fit for it. It’s a shame Martin Campbell couldn’t see that when the Enola Holmes star auditioned for the role nearly two decades ago.
Despite losing the much-coveted role to Daniel Craig, however, sources claim that Cavill never once held it against the award-winning actor.
Henry Cavill Held No Bitterness Against Daniel Craig for Becoming 007
Adapted from Ian Fleming’s novel of the same name, Martin Campbell-helmed Casino Royale was an absolute box office triumph, grossing around $616 million globally. Not only did it become the fourth highest-grossing film that 2006 saw, but it was also the most profitable installment of the franchise before being surpassed by Skyfall (2012) which amassed more than $1 billion all over the world.
Casino Royale‘s dazzling success had a significant effect on Daniel Craig‘s career, launching the British actor into the arms of international fame with the film being his first-ever gig as James Bond. But Craig, 55, had never been the first choice for 007 and it was only after Cavill’s rejection that he bagged the role.
Back in 2005, the Man of Steel star auditioned for the British Secret Service agent but was turned down by the director for being “a little chubby.” The fact that he was much younger than the Knives Out actor didn’t help his case either since James Bond is supposed to be of a much more senior disposition, which Cavill, at that time, wasn’t.
But losing out to Craig didn’t create any animosity between the two and it most certainly didn’t deter The Witcher star’s spirit considering how he’s one of the fan-favorite actors to run for James Bond now that the former has finished his tenure. “He’s been really gracious about the fact that Craig was a great bond and he appreciated the chance to partake in the process,” sources claim.
Will Henry Cavill be the Next James Bond?
So far, the public seems to be adamant about making Henry Cavill the face of the James Bond franchise, now that Craig has stepped down from the role. From the way fans are cheering for the 39-year-old, it’s vivid who their preference for the next Agent 007 is.
But while the Justice League star has been a frontrunner in the race, competition has been cutthroat among other actors; one day Cavill’s name is at the very top of the bookie charts and the next he gets bumped down to the second place with MCU star Aaron Taylor-Johnson running ahead of him instead. So, although the scales have been tipping in Cavill’s favor every now and then, until and unless he gets crowned as Agent 007, nothing can be said for sure.
Hopefully, what Cavill couldn’t achieve all those years ago, he will now.
