It seems that shocking news from the DC Studios have been coming in ceaselessly over the past few days. Henry Cavill will no longer return as Superman, and recently, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman has been scrapped. This messes things up for the Black Adam sequel since viewers are already hyped for the highly anticipated Black Adam versus Superman face-off.
In another shocking news, Cavill’s Superman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman cameos have also been axed from the upcoming The Flash movie. This is a clear indication that the new heads of DC are doing a major overhaul of the franchise.
Henry Cavill Accepts Superman’s Fate Under James Gunn’s DC Studios
About two months ago since Cavill formally announced on social media his return as Superman, the actor takes his word back and gracefully accepts the fate of the character. In his Instagram post, he said:
“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.”
It is evident that the actor is disappointed with the decision, but James Gunn and Peter Safran will have the final say in this. The makeover of the entire DC franchise will remove all of its ties to the previous projects done under the old management. Cavill and Gadot filmed their own cameos for The Flash, but sources report that the studio decided to cut these scenes.
Fans would remember that Dwayne Johnson fought for Superman’s return to the DC Universe, but despite the attempt to gain more audience through the leaked footage of Black Adam and Superman’s face-off, the epic blockbuster did not emerge victorious at the box office. One insider told The Hollywood Reporter, “In the end, he was a pawn in Dwayne’s failed attempt to control a piece of DC.”
The Future Of Superman In The DC Universe
Despite the sad news that Henry Cavill’s no longer returning as Superman, Gunn revealed that he is currently working on a new Superman script that is not an origin story. The director also noted that in this setting, Superman will not be “meeting the major characters for the first time.”
Meanwhile, Cavill has met with the executives to discuss a potential new role for him. The actor is also working on another project at Amazon called Warhammer 40,000.
