The departure of Henry Cavill from The Witcher was a major surprise to fans, who had grown to love his portrayal of Geralt of Rivia. With Liam Hemsworth now set to take over the role, speculation about Cavill’s exit from the popular Netflix series has been rampant. Since the rumor that his hectic schedule was the cause has been debunked, it has become clear that Cavill’s departure was due to creative differences with the show’s writers.
Henry Cavill Exits The Witcher: The Truth Behind His Departure
When Netflix made the announcement that Cavill would exit The Witcher in the upcoming season 3, with Liam Hemsworth taking over for season 4, at the onset, it was widely assumed that Henry Cavill’s departure from The Witcher was due to his hectic schedule. This notion was fueled by the speculation of his return as Superman in the DC Universe.
Nevertheless, this was debunked when James Gunn, the co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, announced that a younger actor would be cast in the role of Superman, fitting with the storyline of a youthful Man of Steel.
Despite the disappointment, fans held on to the hope of seeing Cavill return to The Witcher, but it soon became apparent that this was not to be. Later the true reason for his departure from the show was eventually disclosed as creative differences with the writers.
The Real Reason Behind Henry Cavill’s Departure from The Witcher
Henry Cavill was widely known for his love and deep-seated excitement for The Witcher fantasy series, which he discovered through playing the games created by CD Projekt Red on the custom gaming PCs he built.
This passion for the series even influenced the way he portrayed the character of Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix adaptation. He went as far as to adopt a distinct accent to further establish the character of Geralt of Rivia and regularly insisted that the show should stay true to the source material.
However, statements by former show writer Beau DeMayo indicate that other writers on the series were not as enamored with the source material and held negative opinions towards it. DeMayo wrote:
“I’ve been on show – namely Witcher – where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games (even actively mocking the source material.)
This potentially led to conflict between Cavill and the writing team.
This revelation by the former show writer made it harder to hope for Cavill’s return, further deepening the disappointment and frustration of fans who were eager to see more of Cavill’s take on Geralt.
Fans of The Witcher were shocked and disappointed when news broke about Henry Cavill’s departure from the hit Netflix show. Many fans have expressed their concern about the future of the series, as Cavill’s portrayal of Geralt of Rivia was widely regarded as one of the highlights of the show.
Despite the disappointment, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich remains hopeful about the future of the show and is looking forward to the release of The Witcher: Blood Origin, a prequel series that is currently in the works.
