James Gunn has already charted a new path for DC. Till now, 10 projects have been announced to be a part of the new franchise. Out of this, Superman: Legacy is the first film that will kickstart the new universe. But that’s not the first project that will usher in the new DCU. That honor goes to the animated series Creature Commandos.
It will be the first project set in the new DCU and is rumored to be connected to The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Recently, the entire voice cast of the show was revealed, but fans are wondering if there’s someone left to be announced, like Ron Perlman. Gunn stepped in to clarify that rumor.
James Gunn Reveals The Truth Behind Rumors Of Ron Perlman Joining The DCU
Collider recently revealed the full voice cast of the upcoming Creature Commandos show. Here’s the entire case as revealed by the outlet:
“Sean Gunn as Weasel, who will be joined by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot, with Steve Agee reprising his role as John Economos.”
When James Gunn retweeted the link to the Collider report, a fan asked him if Ron Perlman is joining the DCU as well. The speculation about Perlman being in the DC universe began when Frank Grillo, who has been cast as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, tagged him in an Instagram story.
Grillo added a screenshot of a news headline stating that both he and Perlman were seen at the Shazam 2 premiere. Then he captioned it as “Me and my guy [Ron Perlman] we did a little film together awhile back. Could this be two? Hmmmmmmmmmm.” Here’s the screenshot:
But the co-CEO of DC Studios refuted it and stated that Perlman wasn’t in Creature Commandos. Here’s what he said:
“Ron Perlman is an actor I love but he isn’t on the show and he and I never even talked about him being on the show. It might be better if folks stopped believing rumors. If it doesn’t come from me or DC, it’s not to be believed.”
Here’s the tweet:
It looks like Gunn is shading Grillo for egging on DC fans. After all, he clearly states that if any info doesn’t come from DC or him, they aren’t to be believed. But Ron Perlman didn’t mind the clarification. He retweeted Gunn’s words and agreed with his views by saying “Right back atcha JG!” Also, Ron Perlman isn’t new to the DC universe.
He has voiced characters like Orion and Clayface in the DC Animated Universe, Deathstroke in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Slade in Teen Titans, and way more. As such, due to his history with the franchise, many fans are hoping that the actor can join the DC live-action universe sometime in the future.
What Is Creature Commandos About?
No overarching plot of Creature Commandos has been revealed or even hinted at as of yet. However, it has been made clear that the team will work under Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, who will return for her own announced solo show later on. But it’s assumed that Steve Agee’s John Economos, a faithful employee of Waller, will coordinate the team of misfits. James Gunn had previously stated that there will be seven episodes in the show and he is the one writing all of them.

Since he also stated that the voice actors will play the characters in live-action too. So it will be interesting to see where in the DCU the actors pop up next. James Gunn loves misfit characters and so it will be interesting to see where he takes this new bunch after his successful stint directing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad.
Creature Commandos has no set release date yet, but it’s speculated to release in 2024.
