Robert Downey Jr. Was Considered For The Role Of Doctor Doom
In a special video commemorating the 15th anniversary of Iron Man, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) mastermind Kevin Feige and the film’s director, Jon Favreau, engaged in a discussion about the movie. During the conversation, Favreau dropped an unexpected revelation. He disclosed that their initial meeting with Robert Downey Jr. was actually for the role of Doctor Doom. Feige nodded in agreement, acknowledging the truth of Favreau’s statement. Favreau said,
“I remember that Robert had come in for a general on it, and I remember you had all met with him already for, like, Doctor Doom or something on another project. I think he had come through on, like, Fantastic Four. So everybody sort of knew who he was, and I remember sitting down with the guy, and I was like, geez he just got… that spark in him and his eye, and he’s ready.”
The mention of the Fantastic Four project is associated with the 2005 film featuring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and other notable actors in prominent roles. However, it is widely accepted that this turned out to be a fortuitous turn of events. The Doctor Doom’s role ultimately went to Julian McMahon.
Robert Downey Jr. Would’ve Been A Great Doctor Doom
Robert Downey Jr. has the ability to breathe life into complex characters and possesses a versatility that could have translated remarkably well to the role of Doctor Doom. While Downey Jr. did not ultimately portray the iconic Marvel villain in the 2005 Fantastic Four film, one cannot help but imagine the immense potential he could have brought to the character. And with Secret Wars on the horizon, he could return to MCU if the bosses allow for it.
Moreover, Downey Jr.’s talent for imbuing his characters with humanity and relatability, even in their flaws, could have offered a fresh and intriguing perspective on Doctor Doom. He has shown a remarkable ability to bring out the complexities of morally ambiguous characters, allowing audiences to empathize with them on a deeper level.
This empathetic portrayal could have added an intriguing layer to Doctor Doom’s villainy, revealing the inner conflicts and motivations that drive his actions. Nonetheless, his eventual casting as Iron Man proved to be a game-changing moment, propelling him to superhero stardom and solidifying his place as one of the greatest Hollywood castings of all time.
