Pirates of the Caribbean is undoubtedly one of the classics of cinematic history. The film franchise has been among the most successful and highly watched movies. It is an iconic film series due to the fabulous acting of the lead Jack Sparrow, played by the talented star Johnny Depp. The film franchise completely whirled the actor’s career and made him one of the most sought-after stars in the industry. However, Depp was ousted from the franchise after his and Amber Heard’s defamation case.
Reportedly, there are talks about making the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot film without the star. The Last of Us writer will be developing the new film.
Craig Mazin is working on the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot
Craig Mazin is a famous writer and producer, mostly known for his work in shows like Chernobyl and The Last of Us. The producer-director has won two Primetime Emmy Awards and more for his projects. He has also written famous comedy films like Scary Movie 3 (2003), Scary Movie 4 (2006), The Hangover Part II and more.
As per the latest news, the screenwriter is developing the new Pirates of the Caribbean reboot film. LA Times reported, that Mazin had confirmed the news before the Writers Guild of America the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strike. According to Mazin, Disney has greenlit the project of the sea-faring reboot,
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he [Ted Elliot] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”
Further details of the projects are yet to be shared by the production. However, Disney had been vying for another installment of the superhit franchise for years. There was a buzz that the sixth installment of the film was in making, but it was before Johnny Depp was accused of domestic abuse by ex-wife Amber Heard.
There is a lot of speculation related to the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot like Disney wants to cast Barbie star Margot Robbie in the lead role. Film producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared about the progress of the film,
“I think that that script will come forward at a certain point. We developed two different stories for Pirates, and the other one’s going forward first, so that’s what we’re working on, to try to get that one made.”
The details of the cast are yet to be shared by the production team.
Will Johnny Depp lead in Pirates of the Caribbean reboot?
The fans of the franchise wish to see the actor Johnny Depp back in the costume of the pirate Jack Sparrow. However, the actor had shared during his 2022 defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard that he does not wish to reprise his role as Black Pearl’s pirate captain.
The producer of the franchise has high hopes for Depp’s return as Jack Sparrow, he shared,
“We’re still working on it. Nothing’s definitive yet, but we continue to take little baby steps getting towards a screenplay.”
Depp’s co-star in the franchise, Orlando Bloom, is eager to return to the series. He played the role of Will Turner in its installments. Bloom shared,
“I wouldn’t mind seeing what Will looked like today in some ways, because he was such this earnest guy, but after rumbling around the bottom of the ocean for as long as he would have done at this point, it’d be interesting to see how he surfaces and what he’s like.”
There is a probability of the production of the reboot without Depp, however, the story would be interesting, given the expertise of Craig Mazin.
Mazin’s Pirates of the Caribbean reboot release date is not confirmed yet.
