Martin Scorsese was left in complete awe after witnessing Ray Liotta’s unreal commitment

Apart from Ray Liotta nailing the role of Henry Hill, the thing that stuck with Martin Scorsese about the actor was his unreal commitment to the craft. While speaking with Variety, Scorsese recalled the time when he visited Liotta in his trailer during their filming period and witnessed the actor consumed by grief after hearing the news of his mother’s cancer.

And even though Scorsese insisted the actor that he should go back home to his mother, the actor refused and was adamant about completing the day’s shooting. Scorsese stated,

“One day, I was told that Ray had just gotten a call with bad news. I went to his trailer and when I walked in he was in tears. His mother was dying. I told him that he had to go there to be with her, and he said no. He was upset, it was a terrible situation, but he was going to stay and finish the day. I made sure that this was what he really wanted to do and he assured me that it was,”

And even though the Taxi Driver director and Liotta never crossed paths again after Goodfellas, Scorsese has often shared his regret for not working again with Liotta and shares a colossal respect for the actor.
