Robert Downey Jr. has some great friends in Hollywood and with those friends, an immeasurable amount of memories. One of those memories was with Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise back when Downey Jr and he were at his house.
Telling about a drunken night when Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. played ping pong at the actor’s house, the two became quite competitive. The Iron Man star revealed that when Cruise started beating him at ping pong, he jumped the net and accidentally (or maybe not) broke Tom Cruise’s ping pong table!
When Robert Downey Jr. Broke Tom Cruise’s Ping Pong Table
To be fair, that’s what happens when you set a drunk Robert Downey Jr. against the competitive Tom Cruise…the ping pong table breaks. In an interview with David Letterman back in 1996, the Sherlock Holmes actor talked about his tale with Cruise.
Stating that one drunken night when the actor was over at Tom Cruise’s house, they both had a friendly match of ping pong. The Mission: Impossible actor is known for his competitiveness and was proving it by making the score 21-4. Well, Downey Jr. hilariously recalled that he jumped over the net in a drunken daze and the table shattered.
“One of the first times I met Tom Cruise was…we were playing ping pong. So playing ping pong with him and I’m ecstatic because he’s clearly wiped me out 21 to 4. But then I jumped the net. I splintered this thing into about 6000 pieces, clearly hammered.”
The Due Date actor further continued,
“He [Tom Cruise] was just feeling fear and sadness, I think. He hasn’t called me since. Tom, drop a line”
Ever since the incident, Robert Downey Jr. started getting better movies and found worldwide fame by portraying the role of Iron Man in the 2008 MCU movie. Continuing this personal ambition, the actor recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. His next project, however, seems to be a grandeur series that will probably mark another major milestone in his career.
Robert Downey Jr’s Upcoming Series Will Be A Major Milestone
After starring in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer as Lewis Strauss, Robert Downey Jr. is already busy with another series. Titled The Sympathizer, the series will be a dark comedy based on the book of the same name and will feature Downey Jr. in a multitude of roles.
As per the reports and speculations, the actor will be portraying the roles of an Orange County Congressmen, a CIA operative, and a movie director. The series will depict the story of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War.
There has been no confirmed release date for The Sympathizer but the series will be helmed by Park Chan-wook but the SAG-AFTRA strike may result in some delays in the release of the series.
