Celebs criticizing the MCU for their formulaic approach to their projects is now a common occurrence in the industry, with greats like Martin Scorsese speaking out on the matter. However, it seems even MCU star Sir Anthony Hopkins too wasn’t fond of Marvel’s approach to cinema and wasn’t happy with the material he was given for his Marvel entries in the initial phases of the MCU.
Although Hopkins was selected to portray a pretty big figure in the MCU landscape with the character of Odin, to his disappointment, the actor didn’t have a lot to work to do in his projects.
Anthony Hopkins hated working in the MCU
After making his Marvel debut in 2011’s Thor, Sir Anthony Hopkins reprised the role of Odin in the following projects before eventually getting killed off in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. But despite playing the character for more than half a decade, The Silence of the Lambs star didn’t have anything prominent to do in his tenure in the cinematic universe. While reflecting on his experience in the MCU, the actor blasted the comic-book studio for its heavy reliance on CGI and not giving his character any prominent job in the films. He stated,
“They put me in armor; they shoved a beard on me. Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it.”
However, just like the previous greats who had to experience the backlash from the MCU fandom for sharing their perspective, Hopkins too wasn’t immune from the wrath of the Marvel fandom.
Fans aren’t happy with Anthony Hopkins’ statements against the MCU
Although Sir Anthony Hopkins’ statements have some truth to them, as MCU underutilized the character of Odin and the immense talent of the Oscar-winning actor, fans weren’t happy with his statements. Following the actor’s criticisms against his role in the MCU, fans of the comic-book giant have slammed the actor. with some pointing out the failure of Transformers: The Last Knight, which the actor also starred in.
It’s not uncommon to see industry greats expressing their dislike for MCU’s influence on the modern movie landscape, as giants like Scorsese, Tarantino, and Ford Coppola have shared a similar perspective. And it’s not only fans who’ve been affected by this bashing, Hopkins’ costar Hemsworth also opened up about the situation and claimed these criticisms from his heroes have been super depressing for the actor.
Thor: Ragnarok is available to stream on Disney Plus.
