J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson has a problem with one scene in Oppenheimer
In conversation with TIME, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson talked about his concern over a scene where he tried to kill his teacher. However, he shared that he had trust in the storytelling skills of the director. He recalled Christopher Nolan’s chat with him,
“I know how to tell a story out of this subject. There are going to be parts that you have to dramatize a bit and parts that are changed. As family members, I think you’re going to like some parts and dislike some parts.”
Talking about the scene he disapproved of, he shared,
“The part I like the least is this poison apple reference, which was a problem in American Prometheus. If you read American Prometheus carefully enough, the authors say, ‘We don’t really know if it happened.’ There’s no record of him trying to kill somebody. That’s a really serious accusation and it’s historical revision.”
He added that there is not even one friend or enemy who has heard this story or could testify about its authenticity.
The book American Prometheus summarizes that Robert Oppenheimer tried to kill his teacher but also acknowledged that it may be doubtful.
J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson wished to delete one scene from Oppenheimer
In the interview, J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson Charles Oppenheimer was asked if he would have advised the filmmaker Christopher Nolan to do something differently in the film. He replied,
“I definitely would have removed the apple thing. But I can’t imagine myself giving advice about movie stuff to Nolan. He’s an expert, he’s the artist, and he’s a genius in this area.”
Charles Oppenheimer also shared his experience of watching Oppenheimer for the first time and talked about his unexpected reaction to it. He shared,
“During the movie, I found myself accepting and liking it. I thought it told a compelling story and I could just take it as art that was really engaging. I was really happy to have that reaction. I didn’t expect it.”
Oppenheimer was released on 21 July 2023 with an amazing opening gross of $80 million. The lead cast includes Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. The movie is still running in theatres worldwide.
