The winds of change are blowing strong across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. News heroes are coming up every few months, with the studio seeming to have gone into overdrive after the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019) to introduce to fans the Multiverse Saga.
The Multiverse Saga has a big bad in the form of Kang the Conqueror, who has already made an appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp (2023) and in Loki (2021) in the form of one of his variants. With much of the original Avengers, now gone from the MCU, fans will look toward the ones that remain, and expect Sam Wilson’s new Captain America to step up for the leadership role.
Chris Evans talks about Steve Rogers’ return to MCU
Chris Evans had lent his face to one of comics’ best soldiers: Steve Rogers, who went on to assume the title of Captain America, and made Thanos struggle against him in the MCU. The actor’s Hollywood career really took off after his brilliant portrayal of the First Avenger and it is only expected that he looks back at his role with much affection. In his panel at the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, Evans addressed speculations over the role’s future.
“It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply,” Evans said about leaving Rogers’ role behind.. “He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it… I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn’t quite feel right right now.”
There was heavy speculation that Rogers, who left for an earlier timeline to be with the love of his life Peggy Carter, would return to the MCU in the foreseeable future. The MCU’s Sacred Timeline has only the older Steve Rogers in it, and fans haven’t stopped wondering about the return of Evans as Rogers.
The MCU has a new Captain America at its helm
The events of Endgame changed the face of the MCU as longtime icons of the franchise, Iron Man, Steve Rogers, and Black Widow exited the superhero world, each differently. The end of Endgame saw the older Rogers hand over the Captain America mantle, and the vibranium shield along with it, to Sam Wilson, the Falcon.
The newly-anointed Captain America was seen in action alongside longtime Steve Rogers friend and ally James Buchanan Barnes, or Bucky, the vibranium-armed Winter Soldier, in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021). Sam Wilson is portrayed by Anthony Mackie, and while initially reluctant to pick up the shield, he has come into his own as the new Captain America. How he shapes up against Kang at the end of Phase 5 makes for a mouthwatering prospect.
