Jim Carrey's $264M Darkest Movie Almost Had a More Disturbing Storyline Because of Screenwriter's Own Past Trauma

Jim Carrey is best known for being a legendary comedian. His movies have all shown him to have an edge above every one of his co-stars because of his notorious humor, one which is difficult to compete with. However, that is not to say that he has done some roles outside of his usual order as well.

From playing the Riddler to some much darker roles, he has range despite being classified as a comedian. Despite the classification, he is seen as a legendary actor. One role, in particular, caught the attention of the public in the most astonishing manner possible. The Truman Show is one film that many know about and acknowledge just how beautifully it was made. Although it could have been much darker than what the fans experienced.

Jim Carrey’s Movie Could Have Been Much Darker

Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show was a movie that managed to leave an impact on the audience in the best way possible. A man whose entire life is being broadcasted with him being blissfully unaware of his situation. His urge to get out of his monotonous life and look for a much brighter life was something that caught the attention of not only the public but those within the movie who were witnessing Truman go about his day-to-day life.

“Andrew is the king of paranoia. We once had a meeting at MGM. The valet took our car, and Andrew said, ‘Well, he’s wearing the valet uniform. But we don’t know if he’ll bring the car back, do we?'”

The reality of the concept was rather interesting since no one could have predicted just how close to reality the film would be. The movie shows just how well the lives of people can be manipulated and Truman is the prime example of that. Andrew Niccol even admired how it was only after he finished the script that shows like Big Brother started to televise, proving exactly what his point had been. However, the original script that he had planned was much different.

Jim Carrey Could Have Been A Horrible Man In The Truman Show

The original script for the film did not have Truman with childhood trauma he always believed to be real. Having been brainwashed and manipulated to such an extent, his character’s every move was televised to the fictional and real audience. In an earlier script, he would have been an alcoholic.

“Truman had a drinking problem. He was cheating on his wife with a [sex worker] — of course, he didn’t know that it was the worst-kept secret in the world, since the affair was being televised. In one scene, he fails to intervene in an assault on the subway.”

Not only would he be going through a drinking problem, but Carrey’s character would have also been in an affair. Although Truman would believe it to be a secret, the entire world would know about it. What the world would see was a different version of the character, one which Niccol wasn’t ready to put out just yet.
