With what has now been debunked by both parties on numerous occasions, back in 2012, insider information claimed to have seen the Knight and Day stars sparking up a newfound romance after being spotted together at Diaz’s 40th birthday celebration in London.
The rumors erupted momentarily after the split between Cruise and his ex-wife Katie Holmes, the Dawson’s Creek icon. Back then, this led many to believe that the Top Gun alum’s growing bond with his Knight and Day co-star was a way of alleviating the personal loss he was experiencing after having parted ways with Holmes — a period in time where, as alleged by Tom Cruise’s publicist, the actor was “deeply saddened.”
Cameron Diaz And Tom Cruise Debunked The Dating Rumors
The news of the split between Cruise and Holmes, which had allegedly been initiated by the Batman Begins actress, left the world astounded and simply stumped. The couple who had tied the knot in 2006 in Italy announced that they would be parting ways after five years of marriage. As per the Daily Mail, Cruise’s spokesperson stated the following:
“Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”
Following this astonishing affair, a few months later, rumors and speculations arose when various sources claimed to have seen Tom Cruise at his co-star, Cameron Diaz’s “birthday party.” Here, the pair, who starred in a $262M action film together, were theorized to have been on a “secret date.”
These statements, however, seemed to lose all ground when representatives of the Mission: Impossible alum shut down any credibility that could back up such fantasy-akin insider information.
In a curt response, given to E! News, Cruise’s representative claimed, “It’s false. They are friends.” This in itself marked the ending to the hypothesized romantic affairs between the two Hollywood talents.
Cameron Diaz Broke Her Silence On The Matter
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Cameron Diaz had furthermore to reveal about the topic, stating that she had indeed seen her Knight and Day co-actor on her 40th birthday, but there had been no instances of a date ever occurring.
Furthermore, with a hint of sarcasm and frivolity, the actress stated that despite having not seen Tom Cruise “for weeks”, the two had somehow gotten involved in a bizarre dating rumor – an obvious lighthearted dig at how baseless rumors end up snowballing in the showbiz.
Regardless of the rumors surrounding a romantic rendezvous, the pair, who have worked on multiple endeavors together, share a distinct sense of admiration and respect for one another. While talking to Oprah Winfrey in 2010, Diaz, commenting on Cruise’s disciplined and astonishing work ethic, stated the following:
“He has a very high standard, so that’s a wonderful thing. That’s what you know you’re getting when you’re working with Tom.”
She further elaborated upon her stance, claiming that the Top Gun superstar has always been known for bringing the “best product forward possible.” In wanting to do so, the actor gives it his all and maintains the highest standards of discipline toward his craft. On an inspiring note, this enables his co-stars to be deeply involved in the process as well.
Their appreciation for one another has never been a one-way road. The Hollywood stalwart and action superstar too has echoed the same level of admiration for his co-star, having praised her for her “talented, funny, and athletic” demeanor and on-screen presence.
From such instances, it can be alluded that what the two talents shared off-screen was never a budding romance, but a wonderful, synergetic friendship.
