Mel Gibson’s career has suffered from its fair share of highs and lows over his tenure in the industry. Apart from starring in several classics, including Mad Max, Braveheart, etc. The actor’s career has also suffered from several controversies involving his domestic abuse allegations and antisemitic viewpoints, which resulted in the actor’s fall from grace.
However, among his long list of controversial acts, it seems that the actor was also pretty insecure about his height and reportedly had a heated argument with British Critic Barry Norman over the matter.
Barry Norman once called out Mel Gibson for his lies involving his height
In his book See You In The Morning, late British Film Critic Barry Norman opened up about one instance when the Maverick Star Mel Gibson lost his cool after being confronted about his height. Norman recalled that during his time with Gibson in a private dinner, the Mad Max actor insisted that he was as tall as him despite being under 6 feet. Norman expressed the situation by stating,
“when Mel Gibson insisted he was as tall as I was. I disagreed politely on the grounds that I was just over 6ft and he most certainly wasn’t. But then he grew quite angry about it”
Following their disagreement, one person in the room suggested that they should settle their argument by standing next to each other. But after they decided to do it, Norman explained that he could feel Gibson going on tiptoe behind him to reach Norman’s head level. However, the British Critic backed away from adding more fuel to the fire and said, “OK, Mel, if you’re happy, I’m happy”.
Mel Gibson allegedly tried to make himself taller in 1994’s Maverick
However, it wasn’t the only time when Mel Gibson tried to pretend that he was over six feet. During his time on 1994’s Maverick, one extra revealed Gibson’s alleged act of making him look taller than Jodie Foster in the movie. The extra recalled the incident by stating,
“I was an extra in the movie Maverick. We were a small group for the exterior boat scenes and spent an average of 12 hours on a small sternwheeler with the stars. Mel Gibson is surprisingly short and had to stand on boxes to look taller than Jodie Foster.”
But despite the abundant setbacks that the actor has suffered in his career, Gibson isn’t looking to back down anytime soon. As Gibson is set to star in several substantial projects, including the upcoming John Wick spin-off series, The Continental.
Maverick is available to stream on HBO Max
