Back in 2008, Robert Downey Jr. was enjoying his newfound success and wealth. The world fell in love with the actor, who had suddenly become Hollywood’s biggest A-list star after playing Iron Man in the Marvel films, effectively founding the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His Oscar-nominated performance in Tropic Thunder came next, and then he played the lead in the film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
And, he appeared in the black comedy road film, Due Date (2010). Though it had an A-list cast and was moderately successful for its time, Due Date is rarely brought up today. Oh, and didn’t we mention that Todd Phillips, a director best known to moviegoers and comic book fans, helmed this film?
Meanwhile, Downey Jr.’s co-star, actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer, Danny McBride, also earned high praise for his supporting role in this blockbuster movie. But did you know about some behind-the-scenes facts?
The behind-the-scenes incident came to light in 2010, adding an intriguing chapter to the film’s rich legacy, when the lead actor recalled some unknown facts about his co-star.
What Did Robert Downey Jr. Say About Danny McBride?
Danny McBride is unquestionably a comedy genius who has starred in a wide range of films, from violent action movies to crude comedies, giving memorable and hilarious performances. It is understandable why he is a fan favorite, who has brought in millions at the box office.
In 2010, he joined the cast of the road movie with a black comedy theme, Due Date. Todd Phillip‘s comedy film starred Robert Downey Jr. as the main lead and Zach Galifianakis as Ethan Tremblay.
But nobody knew that this film contained a secret anecdote that Downey Jr. once shared in 2010.
The Sherlock Holmes actor stated something hilarious about McBride in one of his earlier interviews, saying:
“Danny McBride, who is often associated with the types of characters he plays came in studied knew exactly what he was doing and basically put us both (Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr.) to shame for two days and then he beat me up what you can have this because that is my daddy.”
Due Date Has a Talented Cast and Crew
Due Date boasted top talent both in front of and behind the camera, which was one of its many strong points. In the movie, Robert Downey Jr. played the straight-laced architect, Peter Highman, who was just trying to get back to Los Angeles because his wife, Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), was about to give birth.
A series of unfortunate events forced him to travel across the country with Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) and Ethan’s dog Sonny. Naturally, a lot of mischief happened afterward.
The fairly talented cast of seasoned actors and comedic pros was completed by Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis, and Danny McBride, who played supporting roles throughout the various misadventures.
The movie, directed by Todd Phillips, was a success that broke box office records, garnered mixed reviews from critics, and made over $211 million worldwide. Thus, the box office performance of Due Date was positive overall.
Even though Due Date did not become an all-time comedy classic, all of the main actors continued to have outstanding career success after the movie’s release.
Due Date is streaming on Hulu.
