When it comes to the idea of creating a list of the greatest actors, directors, or films, people often argue to come to one common conclusion. Movies starring Hollywood veterans like, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Leonardo DiCaprio, have largely experienced great commercial success.
On the other hand, acclaimed filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, and others have also seen an increase in profits as a result of the accolades they received for their well-received narrations on-screen.
Instead of attempting to impose any sort of definitive or objective best actors or film maker list, think of this as more of a celebration of the entire industry. Is the presence of stars essential to the popularity of movies? Well, that idea seems to be depending on the movie studios, who often pay stars multimillion-dollar fees.
Every film enthusiast has a favorite actor, and they probably also have a favorite filmmaker, whose movies they enjoy watching when it is released.
So, of course, these things occasionally go hand in hand, and many of the best directors are often said to be guilty of using the same actors and actresses again and again.
Elite Group Has More Power On Film Studios Than Any Other Actor?
It is undeniably right to say that Magazine power lists used to be dominated by A-list actors, studio executives, major producers, and heavyweight agents.
But because studios are said to be becoming smaller and not much favoring big corporations, they are making fewer movies. And, also their executives, who typically come from the ranks of lawyers or marketers, are not exactly experts in their fields. But there is one powerful elite that has maintained its position and may have even accumulated more than ever.
It is the selected group of influential directors who have a track record of producing blockbusters or consistently successful, significantly less expensive films.
The list is not very long: James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, Tim Burton, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and Quentin Tarantino are just a few of the film directors who came to mind as a talent agent once stated:
“These directors are like the big stars now. They create these tentpoles, they’re the ones people are willing to bet on. … Having them [as clients] is better than having a big-shot actor.”
Briefing One Such Prominent Example
A notable example of these elite filmmakers’ influence is cited in the casting of Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Brad Pitt was given the script by the director, who asked for a response in 48 hours.
However, Nolan had to turn to Will Smith after the Fight Club actor backed out.
Pitt and Smith, however, declined the offer to play the lead roles in the movie. An insider took a closer look at the situation and claimed that celebrities like Pitt and Smith have a habit of making people wait for years before deciding to accept the role.
“It’s never couched as, ‘Hey, I’m more important than you, therefore just say yes,’ They invent kabuki reasons for why they need an answer, but [the stars] are getting jammed. [Stars like Smith and Pitt] are used to having people wait a year or more [before they commit to a project.] They don’t usually have to board a moving train.”
Well, it makes sense that the two most famous actors in the world would be hesitant to commit to any significant project, much less one as obscure as Inception. Nolan turned his attention to Leonardo DiCaprio after they were unable to cast Smith and Pitt.
With acclaimed directors like Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan, and Quentin Tarantino at the helm, it appears that change is in the air for the movie business, heralding a period of even bolder and ground-breaking cinema.
