The Barbie fever has been high ever since its release and it does not seem to be dying down anytime soon. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds in the lead roles, the film managed to exponentially exceed the expectations of critics and especially the fans who just cannot seem to get enough of the story of Barbie Land.
And now, Margot Robbie’s Barbie is going where no movie has gone since 2011. The film is all set to break the record of Warner Bros’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two and establish itself as the biggest film to have come out of the studio.
Margot Robbie’s Barbie Continues to Impress
While it is true that Barbie faced some backlash for its narrative, the majority of the audience absolutely loved the film and some even kept coming back for seconds. Thanks to the film pulling people back to theatres, it is probably just minutes away from becoming the highest-grossing film of the Warner Bros. studio.
As of writing, the known worldwide figure for Barbie is $1.36 billion. Warner Bros.’s top film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which was released all the way back in 2011, has $1.341 billion to its name. With the way things are going for Barbie, the film would have taken over the throne from Harry Potter 8 by the time you read this. According to a report released by Deadline yesterday, Barbie is supposed to surpass Harry Potter 8 by Monday, August 28, which is today.
On the other hand, the Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds-starrer has already defeated The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the biggest domestic release of 2023 yet. The latter concluded its domestic run with $574 million and the former is going strong at $594 million. As for the worldwide figures, The Super Mario Bros. Movie made $1.358 million. This means that in no time, Barbie will take over the title of the biggest film of 2023, as well.
Previously, the film beat Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight to become Warner Bros’ biggest-selling movie for a Monday.
Margot Robbie Knew This Would Happen
Talking to Collider earlier this month, Robbie opened up about the little sales pitch she made at Warner Bros.’s office in favor of Barbie. She stated that she tried to compare the film to that of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park franchise which was a huge success. The actress also promised that Barbie had the potential to bring in a billion dollars at the box office.
“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director. And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ that and that…pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling but we had a movie to make, okay?!”
Well, little did Robbie know that she was not over-pitching the film at all. On top of that, she probably had no idea that Barbie was going to perform much better than she could’ve ever imagined.
Barbie is currently playing in theatres.
