Like many other iconic franchises, Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones‘ impact on pop culture is monumental and it went on to inspire a generation of new filmmakers and actors, including Mads Mikkelsen. Following the Hannibal star’s illustrious resume, which involves a plethora of critically and commercially successful films and some of the biggest IPs of cinema history, the Ford-led franchise remains a bit special to him.
With Mikkelsen finally set to star in the franchise that played a factor in pushing him into showbiz, the actor explained why Indiana Jones had a bigger impact on him than Star Wars and James Bond.
Mads Mikkelsen admits he didn’t grow up with Star Wars and James Bond
Throughout his prolific career, Mads Mikkelsen has witnessed himself starring in some of the most influential franchises in cinema, but nothing was more personal to him than starring in Indiana Jones. With the actor set to play the main antagonist of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, he reflected on the Harrison Ford-led franchise’s impact on him and his friends. Unlike Star Wars and James Bond, which he didn’t see as a kid, the actor has a more personal connection to Indiana Jones, as these were the movies he grew up with. He explained,
“It’s not my first franchise, but it’s the first one I grew up with. I’ve been lying in all the other interviews when I did Bond and Star Wars. I always said I saw them, but I didn’t”. Reflecting on Indiana Jones, he said, “I remember my brother and I, we [rented] the film together with five other films, and we ended up watching Indiana Jones five times and not the other ones. And so, it is true to say that this shaped our generation,”
With Indiana Jones’ journey set to end, Harrison Ford explained why the 5th film is an important addition, even though playing the character for 4-decades has been exhausting for the actor.

It’s a known fact that Harrison Ford isn’t fond of being known for one single work, as he has been part of several critically acclaimed projects. However, four decades after the franchise’s inception, the actor explained why Dial of the Destiny was needed. Although it’s evident this is the last time we will see Ford in the helms of the iconic character, he assured Indiana Jones 5 will be a deserved ending to his 4-decade-long legacy and is a perfect goodbye. He explained,
“It feels good to me because I feel that we’ve made a really satisfying film for the audience. We’ve taken our concern, our interest in the character, and tried to shape a story that would bring this character back into their lives with an interesting story. And I think given the people that we’ve involved and the character and nature of the story that [director James Mangold] has created for us, it’s a splendid goodbye.”
With days away from its release. it will be interesting how the film tackles the enormous job of dealing with the archaeologist’s swansong in this epic journey.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will hit theatres on 30 June 2023.
