Before appearing in movies, Dave Bautista was already a popular name in professional wrestling. Coming from World Wrestling Entertainment, Bautista appeared in an uncredited role in the comedy film Relative Strangers in 2006 which was directed by Greg Glenna. Nearly three years later, he made his official debut in Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? Starring alongside Willem Dafoe and Michael Shannon.
Bautista found success in his breakthrough role as Drax in MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Later, he collaborated with some of Hollywood’s most prominent directors including Denis Villeneuve, Zack Snyder, and Rian Johnson. Over the years, Bautista has shown his knack for selecting great roles which prompted his rising success working with these great directors.
The Time When Dave Bautista Beat Up Guardians of the Galaxy Crew Member
During the wrap party of the first installment of the franchise, Dave Bautista beat up a crew member, sending him flying across the room with a violent shove. At first glance, it appears that the wrestler-turned-actor is not easy to work with. However, the story has more to it.
Following the backdrop of the story, fans soon realized that Bautista is not a violent man as his WWE persona depicts rather, the incident turned him into a real hero, at least in James Gunn’s view.
The original story came out when a Twitter user named Kyle Jerichow wrote what he heard it was like to work on Guardians of the Galaxy. Stating the opinion of the crew member, the user wrote:
“A senior tech at work today, who worked on @Guardians #GoTG told me about the gigantic rig they made to control the milano, how @prattprattpratt constantly sings on set, and how cool it was to talk with @DaveBautista @RookerOnline [Michael Rooker] @seangunn and @JamesGunn at the wrap party”
Along with the stars, the user also tagged the director to which he replied about his experience seeing Bautista beating up a crew member and revealed the reason in the now-deleted tweet.
“That wrap party was fun! My primary memory was when a crew member was harassing one of our stand-ins & @seangunn was protecting her & the guy got pushy with Sean & @DaveBautista tapped the harasser’s chest & he FLEW ACROSS THE ROOM because Dave actually has real-life superpowers!,” the director twitted.
The incident remarkably states that Bautista would not stand with any harasser.
Bautista’s relationship with Gunn has been great. He was among the Guardians who helped bring Gunn back to the franchise after his dismissal. They have worked in three films in the franchise. Now that the franchise is ending, what’s next for the star?
Dave Bautista Desperately Wanted the DC Role of Bane
Needless to say, Bautista has a fair chance of playing the role for Gunn is a close friend, and Gunn and Peter Safran are current co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. At the beginning of the year, in an interview with Insider, Bautista revealed that he approached James Gunn about playing the role of Bane. “I have had conversations with James about that,” Bautista said.
“but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch…and I think you need to do that,” he added.
“You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that.”
“And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”
The actor also expressed his desire to play Bane many times on Twitter. “I’ve made no secret about this,” the actor said at Justice Con.
“I want to play Bane so bad I went to Warner Bros., had an appointment with them, had an appointment with DC, walked in the door, and said, ‘I want to play Bane.’ I’m not kidding.”
Most recently, the character of Bane was played by Tom Hardy in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
Bautista’s DC role is yet to be confirmed but he is appearing in Denis Villeneuve’s second part of Dune as Glossu Rabba. The movie is set to hit theatres on 3 November 2023.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released on 5 May 2023 and currently running in theatres.
