GTA V Co-Writer Revealed the One Thing That Gave the Studio Sleepless Nights

GTA 5 is one of the best open-world games available in the market. The video game was released in 2013. Yet, after so many years, it maintained the same level of hype. The best reason for this was how it was produced. The graphics and the story were good, but Rockstar Games advertised the game well. Their efforts paid off after so many years.

Dan Houser is the co-founder and the former vice president of creativity for Rockstar Games. During the interview, he was asked if most open-world games share environmental elements that are the same everywhere. With that in mind, Grand Theft Auto 5 did a good job with the environment of the game. Many believe that it resembled some movie.

To this Dan Houser replied,” GTA is the bastard child of many different parents. It’s more urban planning than architecture, though. There’s a great skill in doing the first layouts of a map, it’s so complicated what those artists are doing – the things they have to worry about.”

He added, They have to bring a huge section of the world to life, get things working in the right way, make areas that look believable but work well for gameplay and give good roads for car chases and areas for shootouts. It has to be planned out but must still look organic; you have to capture the essence of what’s really there in a city, but in a far smaller area. It’s a great, great skill.”

While making GTA 5, Rockstar had to make a lot of compromises. The idea of fitting a whole city into a few blocks is difficult. Fans might think that the streets remind them of certain cities in America, but in reality, the game manages to capture the essence, which proves to be a great asset.

Dan Houser also said they had several sleepless nights thinking about how they could improve GTA 5. The criticisms of Grand Theft Auto 4 have helped them get better. The video game has managed to capture the word ‘real’ into its gameplay.

During the interview, one question that managed to catch Dan Houser by surprise was about the gangster culture. The Grand Theft Auto games have always shown the masculine side of being a gangster. Houser replied that they show it, but they are not glorifying them. Due to the game being based on real life, it is important to show it. The producers made sure to undercut it.

When asked about considering a female lead, he said that Rockstar Games is still waiting for a good script. If they find it, then they will have a female lead. But GTA 5 was not something that was made for a female lead – A witty answer by Dan Houser.
