2018’s God of War was set almost 150 years after the previous game in the series, God of War III, and was the eighth installment in the franchise. The game was set in Norse mythology diverting away from the previous games in the series which were all set in Greek mythology. God of War: Ragnarok also marked the end of the Norse Mythology arc, as confirmed by Sony. For the next God of War game, it’s anybody’s guess as to where the God of War would end up with his son and sidekick, Atreus.
Kratos can still continue on different paths and conquer multiple mythologies. While Sony has not officially mentioned what’s next for the God of War, there are several options to consider as listed below. The mythologies mentioned below, in no specific order, would be near perfect for Kratos to conquer.
1. Mayan Mythology Was Considered For 2018 Title
Prior to the release of God of War (2018), Game Director Cory Barlog had mentioned they did consider taking the way of either Egyptian mythology or Mayan mythology, before eventually deciding on Norse mythology for the smash hit game. The Mesoamerican landscapes in the Mayan mythology would offer a variety of environments for players to explore, including the unique Mayan Pyramids. The Sun God, Kinich Ahau is one of the most famous Gods from the civilization, as he is believed to be the generator of time, light, heat, and the four directions which the Universe had in its expanse.
Things can get even better if an Aztec crossover also gets included in the game or in the following title. The Aztec deities, Quetzalcoatl, the God of life, and Tezcatlipoca, the God of the night sky are said to be brothers who often compete with each other and consider themselves “protectors of the earth”. They would be perfect antagonists for Kratos and Atreus to face off in a future title.
2. Hindu Mythology Can Bring Asuras, The Hindu Demons
Hinduism is considered one of the oldest religions in the world and has many deities who have already made an appearance in several games. The Elephant God of Success, Wealth, and Knowledge, Ganesha, Agni, the God of Fire, or even Ganesha’s father, the God of Destruction, Lord Shiva, are all exceptional deities for Kratos to face off against or even fight alongside as allies against the Asuras, who are termed as power-seeking demons or demigods.
3. Egyptian Mythology Could Be Inspired By Chris Roberson’s 2021 Comic
Written by Chris Roberson, the hit 2021 comic God Of War: Fallen God depicts Kratos trying to leave his past behind after the events that unfolded in God of War III. Kratos ends up in Egypt and as he spends his time in the ancient city, Kratos is approached by several mysterious figures including a bird, a primate, and an old man all of whom pass enigmatic messages to Kratos describing his future. These strange figures are revealed to be of Egyptian descent and deities in disguise.
If inspiration was ever needed, Fallen God would prove to be quite perfect to set up Kratos following the Egyptian mythology series. There’s a rumor of the next God of War title being a prequel, and Fallen God might be perfect for gamers to explore what went through between God of War III and the 2018 title.
4. Kratos and Týr Can Together Conquer The Celtic Mythology
Fans of the God of War franchise would know a lot about Týr, the “Norse God of War”. Týr had extraordinary superhuman abilities as well as a lot of supernatural powers. Amongst his other powers, Týr was able to access multiple realms as well, using the Unity Stone. The stone Týr traveled to several distant lands where he explored the Egyptian, Mayan, Greek, Japanese, and Celtic cultures. He was also the first to access Jötunheim’s secret pathways, even before Odin could himself figure it out.
Týr could be the perfect connection for Kratos to explore more of Celtic mythology, and face off against the Irish God of War, Néit. The Celtics also had a Goddess of War named Morrigan, the Goddess of Fire, Brigid, the mother of Irish Gods, Danu, and finally Dagda, the leader of the Celtic Gods. There are several other Gods as well in the Celtic/Irish mythology and would also be quite perfect for Kratos to explore and set up the next couple of games.
5. Japanese Mythology Could Bring A Horror Twist
Last but definitely not least, Japanese mythology isn’t devoid of a God of War for themselves either, as Japanese mythology includes the powerful God of War, Hachiman, who is also known more commonly as the God of Warriors.

It would be fantastic for Kratos’ next step to be of Japanese mythology as there are thousands of different deities, spirits, and creatures that would make excellent enemies in the next title. The Japanese Demons, like Oni, can even bring a horror twist to the game, along with the Shikigami spirits coupled with deities like Hachiman, and Amaterasu, the Goddess of Sun, can all bring some interesting characters, for Kratos to visit and conquer.
All of these mythologies would make for a brilliant series of games as Kratos conquers them one by one and with Atreus alongside him, there could be no saying where the franchise could take the players.
