The Abandoned Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark

Guillermo del Toro isn’t new to directing movies about heroes with monstrous appearances and frightening physicality, considering the 2004 Hellboy and its sequel, which are now considered classics. But the director was also interested in another hero with similar attributes, involving the character of Swamp Thing from DC.

Del Toro was reportedly attached to the Dark universe, which would have involved the supernatural and horror aspect of DC. The Shape of Water director was also close to developing a Justice League Dark movie, that included Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, and Zatanna.

The director was involved with the project until 2015 and the idea was eventually scrapped in 2017, as J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot jumped into the DC bandwagon to develop projects based on the Justice League Dark characters.

But with the recent change in leadership of DC, the future of J.J. Abrams’ Dark universe is unclear. And with Guillermo del Toro’s recent tweet about the Justice League Dark member, fans speculate that the director may finally get to pursue his passion project in the new James Gunn-led DCU.

Guillermo del Toro hints toward a new Swamp Thing movie

Guillermo del Toro has conveyed his love for the supernatural and horror aspect of DC on numerous occasions. And considering the cancellation of Swamp Thing season 2, his recent tweet about the character hints toward his inclusion in DCU.

Recently the comic book writer Christian Ward asked Del Toro in a wholesome manner, whether he recently bought his variant of the Swamp Thing Comics, and the director replied with, “I did-“. Following the director’s reply, fans are curious if the director is finally getting a shot to pursue his passion project.

With James Gunn crafting the DCU from scratch, it appears that J.J. Abrams’ Dark universe may not move forward under the new regime and Del Toro may be attached to the new DCU. And fans believe that the reason Del Toro acquired the comic may involve his research for the live-action movie.

Although nothing is concrete about Guillermo del Toro’s inclusion with the studio, considering Del Toro described himself as a DC fan, the reason behind the purchase of the comic might be his enthusiasm towards the character. But with the shift in power in DC studios, fans are hopeful that the director may get a chance to construct the horror aspect of DC.
