As Top Gun: Maverick is still breaking more and more box office records, actor Glen Powell revealed that it was due to Tom Cruise that we got to watch him in the movie. In an interview, it was revealed that a single call from Tom Cruise influenced him to do the role in the movie which he was reluctant to do. Glen Powell played the role of Hangman in the movie. Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to Top Gun and got released after more than three decades after its previous movie. It has turned out to be one of the most amazing surprises of 2022.
How did Tom Cruise compel Glen Powell to play the role?
Light the Fuse podcast celebrated its 200th episode by inviting some huge names from the industry. Among them came Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie who were also accompanied by Glen Powell and Greg Tarzan Davis. Here an interesting incident came to notice as Glen Powell revealed that initially he was reluctant to play the role but later Tom Cruise’s words regarding a good movie touched him very much. McQuarrie explained the whole situation:
Tom said – and [Powell] was being very frank with Tom about not wanting to be in the movie – and Tom said, “Glen, what kind of career do you want?” And Glen said, “I want your career.” And Tom said, “Well how do you think I got here Glen?” And Glen said, “You chose great roles.” And [Tom] said, “No Glen, I chose good movies.”
If Tom Cruise was not there, Glen Powell’s career could be something different as Top Gun: Maverick not only bashed every Box Office record and turned out as one of the most successful ventures yet but also gained positive words from personalities like Quentin Tarantino.
Top Gun: Maverick is still unstoppable
Top Gun: Maverick follows the life of the pilot Maverick and his relationship with Rooster Bradshaw who is his best friend Goose’s son. He blames Cruise for the death of his father. The film recently toppled Titanic as the seventh highest grosser at the domestic box office. Not only that but it also turned out as the best movie in the career of the Mission Impossible star. The film earned a whopping sum of $1.3 billion yet and it is hoped to break many more awards.
