Dwayne Johnson is an established action star and so is Tom Cruise. With each having their own signature moves and typically unique action capabilities, both Dwayne and Cruise are prominent in their own scene in the entertainment industry. However, no matter how unique they may be it is inevitable that fans find certain similarities between the two.
During the shoot of Johnson’s $427 million movie, the bodybuilder-turned-actor was very strict about not copying his Hollywood contender, Cruise, and even stopped the shoot to rethink the scene.
Dwayne Johnson Did Not Want To Copy Tom Cruise During An Action Scene
Both Dwayne Johnson and Tom Cruise are among the most adrenaline-fueled action icons who continue to consistently deliver amazing performances in their action movies. While Cruise performs challenging stunts and adds intense realism and authenticity to his scenes, Johnson is more on imposing his brooding physical presence in his action sequences.
While both actors have multiple action-packed movies, Dwayne Johnson’s $427 million movie Rampage was on another level. With multiple amazing stunt sequences, it features The Rock often running away from gigantic monsters. And when it comes to running, Cruise is inevitably linked to the act. Hence, when the Jumanji star was told he was running like Cruise, he quickly had the shoot stopped.
“While shooting this running scene all day, one of our producers said ‘Rock you’re running like Tom Cruise in his movies.’ I said stop the music right there. Nope.'”
The reason being, Johnson isn’t too happy with how the Mission: Impossible star tends to run. For he feels his posture is too straight up, making it look more like he is running a race rather than from a gigantic monster.
Dwayne Johnson Does Not Like Tom Cruise’s Running Style
Having played football in college, Dwayne Johnson is more than aware of running styles and does not like Cruise’s almost mechanical running. The reason he didn’t want to copy the MI star’s signature style was that it wouldn’t have been good for the movie or the scene.
“Cruise runs like 6 o’clock. Straight up and down, arms tight to the body like an offensive player running for the end zone. This is the run of a defensive headhunter.”
Instead, the Rock would rather run like,
Forward lean, stride long, arms open and pumping. Intense eyes fixated on the target which my warrior ancestors lovingly referred to as your head. This running form is also called, ‘Get me the f*ck outta here because there’s a genetically modified 50 TON BEAST that’s trying to eat me and all I wanted to do is just want to go home and have tequila and waffles.'”
And that is exactly how he runs when escaping three huge Godzilla size genetically-modified creatures in Rampage.
Rampage can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
